Position Objective
About the role
The primary objective is to perform laboratory specimen collection from patients for diagnostic purposes.
Responsibilities
- Determines and executes the best method for obtaining biological specimens (venipuncture, capillary, heel-stick) from patients of all ages to ensure quality specimens for testing.
- Fulfills orders in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) as requested by authorized providers, accurately interpreting orders and resolving unclear test orders.
- Interacts with patients in a professional and compassionate manner, explaining procedures, addressing concerns, and ensuring comfort during blood collection.
- Prepares aliquots of samples and shipping batches to move specimens within the hospital and to contracted labs.
- Registers, draws, and ships client specimens per vendor protocols.
- Maintains a safe and clean working environment by following procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Fosters cooperation to support smooth workflow handoffs.
- Maintains laboratory supplies inventory and conserves resources by using equipment and materials appropriately.
- Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshoots equipment problems within scope of ability.
- Patient identification and registration, including demographics, insurance, date of service, ordering provider, and special flags.
- Participates in the laboratory quality program (e.g., investigative reports, delay notifications) and supports training of new staff and students as a mentor and resource.
- Adapts quickly to varying workflows and assigned environments.
Requirements
- Required Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
- Required Minimum Experience: One year of experience in an outpatient or acute care facility in an equivalent role (preferred)
- Required Licenses/Certifications: Phlebotomy certification with the National Phlebotomy Association or American Society of Clinical Pathology (or eligible), Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (preferred)
