About the role

Responsible for the systematic collection of blood and urine specimens from patients and delivery to the appropriate laboratory section.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy on all age groups and consistently obtain quality, usable samples
  • Verify patient identity using two identifiers and handle all specimens in accordance with Universal Precautions
  • Actively participate in and support coworkers in VUMC Credo Behavior, demonstrating a positive attitude
  • Collaborate with students and others to promote the clinical laboratory profession
  • Demonstrate flexibility when workload requires changing workflow priorities or schedule
  • Seek ways to improve processes associated with the position
  • Participate in continuing education; take initiative in problem solving; proactively learn new procedures; continuously improve phlebotomy skills
  • Manage inventory, time, and workflow efficiently
  • Recognize and report laboratory compliance issues, including potential fraud, over- or under-billing, CPT coding discrepancies, and questionable medical necessity

  • Phlebotomy (Fundamental Awareness): Limited experience or training in phlebotomy.
