Phlebotomist
About the Role
As a Phlebotomist with HCA Florida Blake Hospital, you can be part of an organization devoted to giving back. This role performs any three of the following non-technical functions under supervision: specimen collection, specimen processing, submission and monitoring of specimens to referral laboratories, and patient registration. The position supports department goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction, and integration of intra- and inter-departmental activities.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of specimen collection and testing requirements, as well as specimen rejection criteria.
- Perform venipunctures and/or finger sticks on pediatric, neonatal, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Perform heel sticks on infants as required by patient population.
- Utilize supplies appropriately and follow established procedures for patient identification and specimen collection.
- Complete appropriate specimen collection documentation and educate patients/families regarding procedures.
- Use computer information systems relative to job functions and perform clerical duties (e.g., faxing, phones, pneumatic tube system, reports).
- Prioritize tasks and plan for completion of duties; review Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR) and address pending specimen collections.
- Receive, register, and order entry laboratory specimens accurately and in a timely manner.
- Label specimens and aliquots according to established protocols and testing requirements.
- Centrifuge and aliquot specimens based on type and tests ordered; prepare specimens for courier pick-up.
- Discard laboratory specimens according to established schedules and perform periodic preventive maintenance and quality assurance procedures.
- Collect chain-of-custody drug collections according to established policy.
- Maintain records/documentation for specimen and other problems; take corrective action to ensure testing validity and accuracy.
- Clean areas affected by emergency specimen spills.
- Assess specimen requirements for referral testing and troubleshoot issues related to specimen requirements or order entry.
- Process, sort, and prepare specimens for submission to referral laboratories; monitor and review referred testing status to ensure timely results.
- Communicate and troubleshoot problem specimens in a timely manner.
- Follow safety policies and procedures; protect sensitive and confidential information.
- Adhere to company policies and standards regarding security and complete assigned training annually.
- Available to work during disasters.
Requirements
- 2+ years of experience performing registration, clerical duties, and specimen processing.
- Ability to interact with co-workers in a team environment and promote a harmonious workplace.
- Excellent customer service practices in all interactions.
- Effective communication skills for exchanging accurate and timely technical information.
- May assist in communicating with customers, floors, and physicians regarding problem or pending specimens.
Qualifications
- Vocational/Technical Degree preferred.
- 1-3 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred.
- Phlebotomy, Medical Assistant, Paramedic, or EMT certification preferred.

About the Workplace
HCA Florida Blake Hospital is a 380+ bed hospital located in Bradenton, FL, on a thirteen-acre campus by the Gulf Coast beaches. It is the only state-designated Level II trauma center in Manatee, Sarasota, and DeSoto Counties, verified by the American College of Surgeons.
