Pharmacy Technician IV - Specialty Infusion

Summary of Job Duties

The Pharmacy Technician IV will work under the supervision of the pharmacist to provide excellent customer service to patients receiving specialty infusion medications. This technician will be responsible for the overall management of specialty infusion medications as related to coordinating with financial assistance teams, prior authorization teams, and scheduling teams. This technician will complete regular outreach calls to remind patients of upcoming specialty infusion appointments and check on the overall wellbeing of the assigned patients. The Pharmacy Technician IV will also be responsible for managing prior authorizations and financial assistance for assigned specialty infusion patients if they are not being completed by other UAMS hospital personnel, as well as, serve as a role model and assist in the training of staff. All clinical issues will be referred to the pharmacist.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications: HS/GED plus 4 years of Pharmacy Tech Experience or Bachelor's Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences; 1 year to obtain ASHP/ACPE accredited technician training or certificate program; National Technician Certification (PTCB); Arkansas Pharmacy Technician Licensure.
  • Competent in all areas and technician roles.
  • Preferred Qualifications: 1 year to obtain ASHP/ACPE accredited technician training, or certificate program (such as PTCB Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician, ASHP Sterile Compounding Certificate, etc.). Master’s Degree 2+ years of UAMS pharmacy experience.
  • Computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Office and EMR experience)

Additional Information

Responsibilities:

  • Possesses advanced knowledge of the adjudication process and mitigates billing problems as they arise for specialty claims.
  • For each infusion follows the patient through the revenue integrity cycle to ensure billing is completed and issues are resolved when needed.
  • Ensures patients have active insurance prior to each infusion and ensures prescription processing in a timely manner with a focus on patient safety and clean claims.
  • Aids others with adjudications issues and can teach the adjudication process.
  • Aids others once work is completed every day.
  • Ensures that prescriptions are accurately filled, and all necessary information is in the work basket including payment.
  • Works to enhance the workflow.
  • Is responsible for improving documentation to enhance patient safety and outcomes.
  • Models professional communication with patients, providers, payers and PBMs.
  • Works in any infusion disease state as needed.
  • Makes sure outstanding prior authorizations are monitored daily and communicates effectively with other UAMS personnel on outstanding prior authorizations when needed.
  • Possesses a good understanding of all disease states.
  • Makes sure outside infusions are coordinated without outside infusion centers as needed.
  • Audits documentation for presence and accuracy.
  • Makes sure outstanding financial assistance is communicated effectively with other UAMS personnel on outstanding financial assistance to streamline timely patient access.
  • Promotes continuous patient communication throughout the patient journey, including completing infusion appointment reminder phone calls.
  • Refers all clinical issues to the pharmacist, always working within the pharmacy technician scope of practice.
  • Participates in the training of staff.
  • Works in any disease state as needed.
  • Makes sure the ACD is addressed and gaps are reported to the Director of Pharmacy.
  • Uses appropriate walk-away codes.
  • Reports all gaps to the Director of Pharmacy.
