Responsibilities
- Answer the telephone within 2 rings if possible and take messages accurately and completely.
- Restocks automated dispensing units on all nursing units accurately and in a timely manner.
- Provides stock to areas which do not contain a Pyxis as needed.
- Runs daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual Pyxis reports.
- Maintains narcotic records.
- Aseptically clean the IV hood.
- Complete annual aseptic technique training.
- Follow USP 797 guidelines for IV preparation, cleaning the glove box, etc.
- Accurately prepare the IV medications and document.
- Batch, restock and reorder IV medications and supplies as necessary.
- Follow USP 800 guidelines for Hazardous Material handling.
- Complete required training.
- Restock and reorder medications in the department.
- Accurately and adequately order from the wholesaler.
- Check in and scan the order from the wholesaler.
- Correct bar code information and NDC numbers in the computer as needed.
- Perform the regular station inspections.
- Remove outdated medications from Pyxis or other locations.
- Check code carts and other "kits" for outdates.
- Monitor pharmacy shortages and recalls.
- Work with Pharmacy Director to find replacement products.
- Absorb and package bulk medications into unit dose containers and keep accurate records of re-packaging.
- Maintain packaging machine.
- Fill employee prescriptions, both for regular prescription and over the counter medications.
- Run required daily reports.
- Send KTRACS report daily.
- Run prescriptions for department purchases and external sales.
- Assist Pharmacist with medication reconciliations.
- Do tech-check-tech for non-judgmental pharmacy tasks, such as Pyxis fills, OR cart, etc.
- Assist in any other clerical duties assigned by the department manager.
- Maintain confidentiality of information concerning patient, medical staff, other employees, job applicants and the hospital itself.
- Function as mentor with new technicians, technician students and pharmacy students.
- Monitor orientation checklist completion.
Qualifications
This position requires frequent walking and standing with occasional sitting. Occasionally one must lift and carry up to 35 lbs. and push or pull items up to 150 lbs. (\~ 0# effort). Manual and finger dexterity are required as well as eye-hand coordination. Vision and hearing must be corrected to normal range. Some exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials and needles is required. Working conditions are sometimes stressful. Frequent bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, stooping, and overhead work is required. Frequent grasping and reaching is required. Requires the ability to distinguish letters or symbols. One must be able to use a telephone, typewriter, copier, fax machine, computer terminals, and printer.
