This position provides Pharmacy Technician support services for the inmate population at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Gilmer in Glenville, West Virginia. The role assists the staff pharmacist with pharmacy operations in accordance with Federal Bureau of Prisons policies, institutional requirements, and applicable regulations.
Responsibilities
- Medication and Pharmacy Support
- Assist the staff pharmacist in ordering, stocking, storing, and dispensing prescription and non-prescription medications.
- Perform duties within Bureau of Prisons Formulary constraints and budgetary guidelines.
- Prepare Pill Line medication cards and unit-dose medications for Pyxis.
- Complete and maintain competency through the Pharmacy Competency Module.
- Maintain knowledge of the Bureau of Prisons Formulary and its updates.
- Medication and Supply Inventory
- Assist the pharmacist in maintaining medication stock in the main pharmacy, satellite camp, crash carts, emergency bags, and automated dispensing systems.
- Check for outdated medications in accordance with policy.
- Maintain narcotics, needle, and syringe inventories.
- Restock and audit the Night Stock cabinet or automated dispensing system.
- Maintain stock records.
- Pharmacy Area Maintenance
- Maintain pharmacy areas in a clean and orderly condition consistent with safety and sanitation guidelines.
- Documentation and Clerical Duties
- Use the Bureau of Prisons electronic medical record for documentation.
- Schedule patients and prepare institutional call-outs.
- Scan, file, and type documents, including institutional memoranda.
- Answer telephones and perform minor clerical duties.
- Technical Duties
- Maintain working knowledge and technical computer skills related to pharmacy operations.
- Apply knowledge of methods, techniques, and procedures for medical equipment and automated systems.
- Quality Assurance
- Participate in Improving Organizational Performance Data activities.
- Engage in Quality Assurance activities as directed by the pharmacist or Health Services Administrator.
- Patient Management
- Receive patients and explain procedures to alleviate anxiety.
- Submit reports and evaluations as requested.
- Follow Bureau of Prisons Health Services Manual, institutional mandates, and department policies.
- Maintain communication with the Clinical Director, Health Services Administrator, and Contracting Officer’s Representative.
- Ensure impartial access to treatment regardless of race, creed, sex, national origin, or religion.
- Inmate Management
- Maintain frequent and unsupervised contact with inmates while ensuring compliance with institutional rules.
- Remain aware of institutional security requirements and maintain a professional relationship with inmates.
- Report violations of institutional rules to a Government employee and provide documentation as requested.
- Institutional Security and Orientation
- Attend the Institution Familiarization Orientation Program before beginning duties.
- Comply with institutional regulations on safety, custody, inmate conduct, identification, accountability, and access.
- Sign in and out of the institution and wear the issued identification badge at all times.
- Follow institutional security requirements and adhere to Privacy Act requirements for medical documentation.
- Performance and Oversight
- Perform duties in accordance with accepted standards, Federal and State regulations, Joint Commission standards, and American Correctional Association standards.
Requirements
- Completion of a formal Pharmacy Technician Program and a satisfactorily completed internship.
- At least one year of Pharmacy Technician experience.
- Current Basic Life Support cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
- Experience working in a correctional environment is preferred but not required.
Skills
- Knowledge of methods, techniques, and procedures for Pharmacy Technician activities.
- Knowledge of medical equipment and automated systems used in pharmacy operations.
- Knowledge of safety principles and infection-control requirements in a patient-care environment.
- Ability to relate effectively with physicians, peers, inmates, and others.
- Ability to recognize, report, and record changes in a patient’s condition.
- Ability to administer medication.
- Working knowledge of technical computer systems related to pharmacy operations.
Schedule
- Services are required five days per week, Monday through Friday, excluding Federal holidays.
- Seven one-hour sessions per day, averaging 35 sessions per week.
- Hours typically between 6:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., including a 30-minute unpaid lunch period.
- Schedule is subject to change based on institutional needs, security matters, inclement weather, or other unforeseen circumstances.
- Must be available for emergencies as necessary.
- In the event of an absence, time may be made up without exceeding 35 hours in the applicable week.
Security, Health, Certification, and Licensure
- May be required to submit to testing for tuberculosis or other communicable diseases or provide evidence of recent testing or immunity.
- Must immediately report any adverse action (e.g., suspension, revocation, or restriction) taken by a regulatory body involving certification or licensure.
- Must report any medical condition that could pose a risk to workers, inmates, patients, or the public.
Restrictions
- Shall not supervise inmates or Bureau of Prisons staff.
- Shall not participate in inmate accountability or formulate policy.
- Shall not attend meetings, staff recalls, or staff functions unrelated to the role.
- Shall not perform duties outside the scope of the Statement of Work.
Attire
Must wear appropriate and professional attire at all times. Khaki or green clothing is prohibited, as these colors are worn by the inmate population.
