About the role
The successful candidate will lead and provide expert patient care in a hospital pharmacy setting. They will collaborate with physicians and other clinicians to optimize drug therapy and ensure the safe and secure storage of medications.
Responsibilities
- Represents the department in interactions with Health System personnel and participates in committees and task forces.
- Coordinates problem-solving efforts with patient care providers to ensure high-quality service.
- Maintains a positive environment for patients, parents, and visitors.
- Maintains the department's quality assurance program and addresses quality assurance issues.
- Develops and executes regular pharmacist meetings and schedules.
- Develops and executes scholarly and research projects in collaboration with staff pharmacists and providers.
- Maintains an open-door policy and provides guidance and counseling to personnel.
- Identifies resource needs and develops appropriate plans to address operational problems.
- Evaluates results from quality control tests and unusual occurrence investigations.
- Serves as a role model for assigned staff and develops educational in-services.
- Provides supervision to pharmacists and technical support staff.
- Supervises staff to ensure accountability and stewardship of department resources.
- Assists with administration and management of resources, supervising assigned pharmacists.
- Evaluates performance and competency and defines development goals.
- Serves as a resource for medication procurement and dispensing.
- Advise and coach staff to identify resolutions for patient issues.
- Guides pharmacists to apply industry trends and best practices in optimizing the use of medication.
- Assists with administration and management of resources, supervising assigned pharmacists.
- Ensures adherence to regulatory and fiscal requirements.
- Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees.
- Functions as advisor to unit and administration.
- Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies, and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge.
- Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action.
- Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.
- Provides supervision to pharmacists.
- May also include supervision of technical support staff.
- Responsible for assigned staff scheduling, timekeeping, training, goal setting, and performance evaluations.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Three (3) years of experience as a licensed pharmacist in a hospital pharmacy or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated subject matter knowledge of pharmaceutical theory and industry best practices in optimizing the use of medication to treat patients.
- Stays updated on pharmacy regulations and developments in research and design.
- Ability to apply principles to an acute care setting.
- Knowledge of relevant Pharmacy Department, medical center, and UC policies and protocols including medication storage, safety, and patient privacy and treatment.
- Knowledge of all pharmacy federal and state laws and regulations.
- Demonstrated leadership skills in training and guiding employees in clinical service lines.
- Motivates and inspires staff to improve quality and services.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment.
- Ability to organize assigned staff and unit in an efficient and effective manner.
- Ability to apply policy knowledge to identify productivity inefficiencies and compliance risks.
- Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, patients, multidisciplinary team members, senior management, and assigned staff.
- Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies.
- Demonstrated ability to solve patient problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process.
- Ability to listen actively to clinical staff and patients, understanding varying viewpoints and receiving feedback.
- Verbal and written communication skills to tactfully articulate reasoning behind own opinions and change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from others.
- Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in clinical documentation applications and pharmacy database technology and train others to effectively use applications.
- Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time.
Qualifications
- Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (PharmD).
- PGY1 Pharmacy Residency, or equivalent experience.
- Preferred PGY2 Residency Training, or equivalent experience.
- Registered Pharmacist in the State of California.
- Basic Life Support certification.
- Advanced Certification (e.g. BCPS, BCCCP, CDE).
