Pharmacy Clinical Specialist Emergency Medicine
Salary range: $113,692.80 – $170,518.40 per year. Factors such as skills, experience, and internal equity may influence the actual offer.
About the role
Provides a minimum of two in-services per year on rational medication therapy and medication procedures to healthcare professionals and patients. Actively participates in training and mentorship within the peer group and across campus pharmacists in a particular service line, including pharmaceutical care and disease state management. Works closely with the multidisciplinary team for a designated service line and provides backup support to other service lines as assigned.
Maintains an active physical presence on patient care units for 80% of the shift, accounting for lunch, meetings, presentations, interviews, project days, and precepting. Participates as an active committee member within the assigned service line and attends additional meetings as required. Provides clinical expertise in the assigned service line and additional clinical programs. Serves as the primary preceptor for pharmacy students and residents, fulfilling all documentation responsibilities. Communicates effectively with healthcare professionals, patients, and family members where appropriate.
Actively participates in local, state, and national pharmacy societies. Creates national visibility by presenting clinical information or programs, such as poster presentations, managed case studies, or publishing in nationally recognized journals.
Responsibilities
- Monitors drug therapy regimens for contraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, allergies, and disease state appropriateness relative to drug and dose.
- Actively participates across the campus structure, aiding in recommendations for appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic medication alternatives to medical staff and peers.
- Provides accurate and timely medication information to all healthcare professionals.
- Takes a lead role in clinical initiatives, improving patient safety and medication use.
- Facilitates or assists in the medication utilization evaluation process for a particular service.
- Documents all clinical activities and interventions accurately and completely.
- Supports and participates in the organization’s quality improvement, risk management, and patient safety programs, including National Patient Safety Goals, Core Measures, regulatory compliance, and HCAHPS medication-related initiatives.
- Prioritizes work and assists in the implementation of clinical process changes and others as assigned.
- Assists with the preparation of the pharmacy newsletter and other forms of written and electronic communication or publications.
- Performs drug class reviews and prepares drug monographs for committee submission and review.
- Participates in all aspects of managing the drug formulary.
- Participates in additional department functions to support the operations of the pharmacy department.
- Fulfills Clinical Pharmacist 1 job responsibilities when needed.
Requirements
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Experience using computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheet software, and pharmacy information systems.
- Interest and knowledge in pathophysiology, interpretation of diagnostic criteria, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacotherapeutics in the assigned service line.
- Minimum of 1 year of hospital pharmacy experience AND one of the following:
- At least 2 years of hospital pharmacy experience, OR
- Completion of a 1-year (PGY1 or general practice) residency/fellowship, OR
- Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS).
Qualifications
- Graduate of an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy at a college or university.
- Completion of two years of hospital pharmacy experience or an ASHP-approved pharmacy residency program.
- Licensure by the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy by examination or reciprocity.
- BLS and ACLS certification (PALS may substitute for ACLS if the role is pediatric-focused).
- Doctor of Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy (preferred).
