Personal Support Specialist (PSS)
About the role
Personal Support Specialists (PSS) provide hands-on assistance with daily living for older adults with functional limitations and people with disabilities. PSSs deliver services related to a member’s physical requirements for assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) according to an authorized plan of care, which varies depending on the setting and individual needs.
The PSS is responsible for providing excellent, resident-centered, personal care, including assistance with showering/bathing, dressing, toileting, and mobility. Additional tasks may include meal service, laundry, housekeeping, and other assigned duties. The role focuses on creating a caring environment as part of a clinical team in an Assisted Living setting, with the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with residents.
Responsibilities
- Assist residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, toileting, and mobility.
- Support Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) as outlined in the care plan.
- Provide meal service, laundry, and light housekeeping.
- Work collaboratively as part of a clinical team to ensure a safe and supportive environment.
- Build positive relationships with residents while maintaining a high level of customer service.
- Exercise independence, flexibility, and good judgment in daily tasks.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Personal Support Specialist Certification (or willingness to obtain it—training provided).
- Experience with or desire to care for older adults and/or individuals with chronic illnesses.
- Strong verbal communication skills and ability to create a safe environment.
- Ability to pass a Maine State Background Check and provide excellent references.
