Person In Charge (PIC)
Position Purpose
Exemplifies and ensures strong customer service in all aspects of the job. Directs and controls the operation of the Front End in the absence of store management to achieve sales and profit objectives.
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
- Provide customer service as defined by the employer within the scope of the position and company policy.
- Handle emergencies, customer complaints, employee or customer accidents, and supervise all store personnel.
- Maintain a high level of familiarity with company policies and procedures.
- Supervise the sales floor to monitor service and replenishment of products.
- Replace stock in displays surrounding the checkout area.
- Assist in maintaining a clean and safe work environment within the store.
- Assist other cashiers with computer, register, and scanner problems.
- Perform basic office functions to assist customers and personnel.
- Operate the electronic cash register to total customers’ final bill.
- Receive payment for customer purchases and count back correct change.
- Bag groceries in paper, canvas, or plastic bags.
- Lift bags into grocery carts.
- Offer customer assistance with carry‑out and perform the task if a Courtesy Clerk is not available.
- May be responsible for completing close‑of‑day functions in the office.
- May be responsible for counting out‑of‑stock product.
- May count tills when other cashier‑checkers leave.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Related Qualifications
- Ability to follow company customer service procedures.
- Demonstrated prior customer service skills or related experience.
- Ability to interact with customers and co‑workers.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Knowledge of all positions within the store.
- Ability to work independently.
- Desired: Prior experience as a clerk or manager.
Supervisory Responsibilities
All store employees during the absence of the Store Director or Assistant Store Director.
Pay
The pay range is $18.28‑$24.15 per hour, but not less than the local minimum wage. Starting rates vary based on location, experience, qualifications, and any applicable collective bargaining agreement.

Work Environment & Physical Demands
Inside: 100 %; Outside: Rare. Temperature extremes: N/A. Chemicals: Seldom (mild detergents or glass cleaner). Machines, tools, and equipment include six‑wheeled cart, grocery cart, box cutter, pens and pencils, spray bottle, rags, mops, broom, telephone/intercom, cash register, credit‑card scanner, computer, pallet jack, bailer.
Physical demands involve constant (over 70 % of the time) lifting of 1‑10 lb, frequent (30‑70 %) lifting of 11‑20 lb, occasional (10‑30 %) lifting of 21‑35 lb, and occasional carrying of 1‑10 lb. The role requires constant standing, frequent walking, and occasional use of a step stool for high‑shelf stocking. Vision, hearing, and speech requirements include peripheral vision, near vision for scanner operation, conversational hearing, and use of intercom/telephone.
