Permitting Technician I - Customer Service

Join our team in a role that involves responsible clerical, technical, and customer service work concerning the review of permit applications for development within Pasco County. This position provides professional and courteous responses via telephone and online.

Responsibilities

• Answer customer questions concerning which construction activities and projects require permitting.
• Assist citizens with inquiries, complaints, investigations, billing questions, and account information.
• Provide specific information about procedures, regulations, fees, ordinances, permits, plans, billing, licensing services, and codes.
• Determine the types of permits required for construction activities and projects proposed by applicants.
• Accept and review permit applications for completeness and accuracy.
• Verify property Parcel Identification Numbers and job site street addresses.
• Identify required reviews by Pasco County before a permit may be issued and the responsible office for performing the review.
• Determine approvals from other government agencies and make referrals as necessary.
• Calculate review fees and notify applicants.
• Prepare procedures for processing permit applications.
• Expedite the processing of permit applications where problems have been identified.
• Process monetary transactions and balance all monies collected against accounting screens.
• Establish and maintain files and records.
• Perform data entry and retrieval using computer software applications.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
• One (1) year of experience in an organization providing regulatory services involving permitting, licensing, or inspections, or in permit obtainment services involving regulatory agencies.
• One (1) year of experience in customer service duties involving frequent public contact.
• Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
• Notary public or ability to obtain commission as a notary public within nine (9) months from the date of hire is preferred.

Skills

• Knowledge of general office practices and procedures.
• Ability to use computer systems in researching reference files.
• Knowledge of Pasco County's policies and procedures concerning application review and permit issuance.
• Familiarity with the construction trades and real estate.
• Ability to interpret construction plans, deeds, and site plans.
• Ability to answer questions and review permit applications in a customer service environment.
• Ability to make decisions and work without close supervision.
• Ability to operate a personal computer, calculator, and other office equipment.
• Good phone etiquette.

Physical Skills/Working Conditions

• Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written, and visual communication.
• This position works primarily remote and is predominantly sedentary.
• Upon staffing shortages, employee must be prepared to work in one of the other outer offices and provide their own transportation.
• During Emergency Operations Center Activation, employees must be prepared to work additional hours and job duties.
