About the role

The Clinical Nurse Educator is responsible for the initial and ongoing education, competency assessment, and evaluation process within assigned units. This role assists Nursing Services by providing programs and training to enhance technical, psychomotor, and critical thinking skills. The Nurse Educator maintains clinical competency to assess and support the needs of assigned units.

Responsibilities

  • Initiate, plan, implement, and evaluate the orientation and competency program for newly employed, transferred, and current nursing staff under the direction of the Nurse Manager for Education.
  • Collaborate with employees, Clinical Coordinators, and preceptors to provide input and recommendations for action plans for staff not making satisfactory progress toward clinical competency.
  • Facilitate and/or provide support for general nursing orientation.
  • Evaluate and maintain the competency assessment program, providing input for annual reviews with the Nursing Manager.
  • Adjust implementation plans based on patient population and services.
  • Act as a clinical consultant for nursing staff and other clinical areas as needed.
  • Research current evidence-based literature and practice to support the growth of nursing personnel.
  • Respond to requests for clinical guidance with new procedures and/or equipment within the scope of practice.
  • Provide ongoing specialty skills review for staff and maintain appropriate records.
  • Develop and implement initiatives and projects to meet education and clinical needs.
  • Promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Maintain sufficient bedside presence to assess unit needs and provide support to staff.

Requirements

  • Minimum Required Education: MSN, or BSN with completion of eligible MSN program within 2 years.
  • Experience: 3+ years in an inpatient acute care facility and in an area of specialty clinical responsibility.
  • Licensed to work as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia or a compact state.
  • Must maintain BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
  • Other certifications as required for nurses working in the assigned clinical area.

Qualifications

  • Preferred: Certification in the Perioperative services field, or must be obtained within 2 years of hire.
