Description of Work

This position supports highway and bridge maintenance operations by training on equipment, learning safety procedures, and assisting with daily work tasks. The role builds the skills needed for future licensing and certification while helping crews maintain safe travel conditions. As a PennDOT CDL Operator Trainee, you will perform the following duties:

  • Equipment Training: Learn to operate heavy trucks, loaders, and other construction equipment safely and correctly
  • Safety Practices: Follow safety procedures, use protective equipment, and report hazards or incidents to supervisors
  • Manual Labor: Perform tasks using tools such as shovels, rakes, chainsaws, mowers, and patching machines
  • Vehicle Operation: Operate controls, use seat belts, and install or remove tire chains on dual-wheel vehicles
  • Worksite Awareness: Observe surroundings, make adjustments, and help maintain safe work areas for crews and the public
  • Environmental Compliance: Apply environmental protection requirements and complete assigned training for maintenance activities

Qualifications Required

  • Special Requirements: This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit on the first day of work.
  • This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations by the first day of work.
  • Additional Requirements: This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualification

Ability to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
