Scope of Position
The role of a Peer Recovery Supporter (PRS) is to support patients with and in recovery from a substance use disorder (SUD). PRSs serve as a role model, mentor, advocate, and motivator for patients with SUD to order help them engage in necessary treatment, promote long-term recovery, and prevent relapse.
Position Summary
- Listens to patients and shares personal experience to provide insight on barriers to recovery, identify solutions, and provide hope and address shame and stigma.
- Encourages patients in their treatment journey and shares medically accurate information.
- Works with patients to identify recovery needs, set goals, anticipate barriers, and develop resilience skills.
- Acts as an advocate for the patient to address all medical and behavioral health needs.
- Mets with family and friends of the patient, with permission, to answer questions, talk about the process of treatment & recovery, and dispel myths.
- Works closely with other healthcare professionals to monitor progress, identify concerns, and provide holistic and culturally competent care.
- Cultivates knowledge of local addiction resources and engages in community outreach with other agencies that serve individuals in recovery who may be interested in treatment services from OSUWMC.
- May be available to talk with patients after discharge to ensure appropriate follow-up care.
