About the Role
The Patient Care Technician at Erlanger Health Systems provides direct and/or indirect care to patients. This role requires the ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary for providing age-appropriate care, exercising judgment to identify signs and symptoms needing further evaluation by a licensed nurse, and effectively communicating with patients and team members.
The employee must assist nurses in the admission process, adhere to HIPAA guidelines, and transport patients to receiving departments.
Education
Required: High School Diploma or equivalent, or meet one of the following preferences:
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the State of Tennessee
- First Responder
- EMT
- Nursing student who has completed Fundamentals of Nursing
- Medical Assistant
- Pre-Med student
- Military Corpsman
- Combat Life Saver or Combat Medic
- Surgical Technician
Those employed as a Patient Care Technician prior to March 1, 2004, without the above educational requirements are grandfathered into the role. All new hires must successfully complete an Erlanger fundamentals checklist, observed demonstration, and pass a written exam.
Experience
Hospital experience is preferred but not required.
Requirements
- BLS certification completed prior to assignment to a unit/department and maintained thereafter.
- Preferred certifications: CNA, EMT licensure, First Responder, or Medical Assistant certification.
