Paving Foreperson
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Paving Foreperson to lead and oversee daily asphalt paving operations. This role is responsible for supervising paving crews, coordinating resources, ensuring jobsite safety, and delivering high-quality work on schedule and within budget. The Paving Foreperson reports directly to the Paving Superintendent and serves as the on-site leader and safety champion.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
- Serve as the jobsite Safety Champion, ensuring the safety of crew members, subcontractors, and the public.
- Enforce all company policies and OSHA, DOT, and EPA regulations.
- Lead, supervise, train, and schedule paving crews.
- Plan and coordinate daily work activities, production goals, and jobsite organization.
- Read and interpret plans, specifications, and work orders.
- Oversee quality control and finished product standards.
- Cover asphalt deliveries, supplies, trucking, traffic control, and grade crews.
- Communicate professionally with customers, inspectors, coworkers, and the public.
- Act as the primary on-site representative for paving operations.
- Maintain accurate time, material, and production records.
- Submit daily crew timecards with proper coding.
- Track equipment usage, labor hours, quantities, and yields.
- Perform field measurements and calculate job quantities.
- Absorb general labor duties such as shoveling, raking, or laying asphalt.
- Operate heavy equipment if trained and authorized.
- Travel between multiple jobsite locations.
Qualifications & Work Requirements
- Education & Experience: High school diploma or GED preferred. 5–10 years of asphalt paving experience, including supervisory or lead experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
- Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Strong understanding of asphalt paving methods, equipment, and materials. Proven ability to lead and motivate work crews. Ability to read plans, grades, and specifications. Knowledge of DOT, OSHA, EPA, and CDL regulations. Strong math skills for quantities, yields, rates, and percentages. Ability to communicate effectively in one-on-one and small-group settings. Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills. Basic computer and keyboarding skills.
- Licenses & Certifications: Valid Driver’s License required. Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred.
