Paving Foreperson
Position Overview
The Paving Foreperson is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the asphalt paving crews. This position will primarily perform supervisory duties, but on rare occasions may assist with general laborer, equipment operation, and maintenance tasks as needed. The position will report directly to the Paving Superintendent.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
- Be the site safety champion: ensure the safety of all crew members and the public who may interact with the job. Follow and enforce company policies and procedures with all crew personnel and subcontractors.
- Coordinates and plans daily work activities, sets production targets, job site organization, reading of plans and work orders, interpretation of specifications, overall quality of finished the product.
- Communicates with customers, inspectors, coworkers, and the public in a positive and friendly manner.
- Supervises and schedules work crews.
- Covers quality control testing as required.
- Organizes job site goals, timelines, and budgets.
- Orders required supplies and asphalt materials and coordinates with grade crews, trucking, and traffic control as needed.
- Performs field measurements and monitors job quantities & calculates yield.
- Drive to various job site locations.
- Affords assistance with general laborer duties as needed, which may include shoveling, laying asphalt, raking, and other tasks as required.
- Affords assistance with heavy equipment operation, if trained, as needed at job site locations.
- Maintains time and materials records necessary to complete daily job costing.
- Submits daily crew timecards with proper coding; records equipment hours, labor hours, and progress quantities correctly.
- May be subject to drug testing, medical exams, and physical agilities testing.
- Regular and timely attendance. Work schedules fluctuating in or out of town.
Education/Experience
- A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred and 5-10 years of related asphalt paving experience or an equivalent combination of education and training.

- Thorough knowledge and previous experience of the asphalt paving industry and its means and methods.
- Demonstrated the ability to supervise and lead crew members.
- Ability to understand plans, specifications, and grades.
- Knowledge of DOT, OSHA, EPA, and CDL laws and procedures.
- Must demonstrate safety awareness and comply with company policies and procedures.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent, land to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
- Ability to work well with others in a group or one on one setting.
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should be able to type and use keyboards accurately.
