Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum age of 21
  • Pass a written exam and physical agility test
  • Licensed by the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record
  • Three years of law enforcement experience
  • Intermediate Peace Officer Certification or higher
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public, supervisors, and co-workers

Responsibilities

  • Perform patrol duties with professionalism, respect, integrity, compassion, accountability, and transparency
  • Train, mentor, and supervise subordinate personnel
  • Exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, and the public
  • Foster positive relationships between the police department and the community
  • Enforce laws, preserve peace, protect life and property, investigate crime, apprehend lawbreakers, and provide community services
  • Model desirable values and ethics to subordinates and the community; build positive morale
  • Perform shift work, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Patrol city streets, parks, commercial, and residential areas to enforce laws, control traffic, and prevent or detect criminal activity
  • Respond to emergency calls and investigate accidents, robberies, disturbances, domestic disputes, and other incidents
  • Interview suspects, witnesses, and victims; preserve evidence; arrest violators; and assist at accident scenes
  • Conduct follow-up investigations, develop leads, and testify in court
  • Operate a motor vehicle for department business
  • Identify, pursue, and arrest suspects
  • Prepare reports documenting incidents and activities
  • Render first aid to injured persons
  • Evaluate complaints and emergency requests to determine response requirements
  • Monitor and investigate suspicious persons, situations, safety hazards, and illegal activity
  • Photograph crime and accident scenes; interview principals and eyewitnesses
  • Monitor traffic, issue citations or warnings, and direct traffic during emergencies
  • Process prisoners and maintain booking records
  • Inspect public establishments for compliance with rules and regulations
  • Act as official escort for events such as funeral processions
  • Supervise police officers and staff, including scheduling, assignments, and coordination of shift activities
  • Review police reports prepared by subordinate officers
  • Maintain contact with police personnel, the public, court officials, and other city officials
  • Conduct performance evaluations and counseling for assigned personnel
  • Coordinate training, assignment, and development of subordinate officers
  • Exchange information with other law enforcement agencies
  • Make decisions regarding staff assignments and incident investigations during shifts

Physical & Mental Requirements

  • Ability to lift objects, bend, stoop, crawl, stand, and walk for extended periods
  • Operate squad cars, restraint devices, computers, first aid equipment, and cameras
  • Coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs for tasks such as data entry
  • Exert moderate physical effort in sedentary to light work, including climbing, balancing, kneeling, and pulling
  • Recognize and identify similarities or differences in colors, forms, sounds, and odors
  • Work under pressure with numerous distractions while maintaining ethics and public service skills
  • Work emergency or non-traditional hours as necessary
  • Pass a drug analysis test, physical exam, and background check
