Patrol Officer

Full-time position in Jackson, Michigan.

About the role

Under supervision, during varied hours, patrol assigned district or beat on foot, bicycle, or in a police vehicle. Enforce laws and ordinances, preserve law and order, prevent crime, protect life and property, and arrest and prosecute law violators. Investigate and report accidents, render aid, and enforce traffic laws using radar or laser units. Direct pedestrian and vehicular traffic, address parking violations, ensure streets are unobstructed and properly lighted, and investigate complaints. Assist other city departments, guide strangers and children, perform clerical and maintenance tasks, and maintain records of arrests and incidents. Make public presentations on behalf of the department and engage the community to form partnerships aligned with the department’s values, mission, and vision.

Must wear approved uniform attire, meet grooming standards, use approved equipment, and be certified through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) or currently enrolled in a Police Academy where MCOLES certification is expected upon completion.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship.
• Current Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) certification, eligibility for certification prior to the application deadline, or enrollment in a Police Academy where MCOLES certification is expected upon completion.
• Ability to pass the MCOLES reading/writing test and other pre-employment screenings.
• Lateral transfers from other law enforcement agencies are accepted.

Physical Demands

• Frequently stand, walk, run, sit, use hands and fingers, talk, and hear.
• Fire firearms and drive a vehicle.
• Specific vision requirements: color vision, close vision (including small print), peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Work outdoors in various weather conditions throughout the city, with occasional indoor work.
• Noise levels vary from quiet to loud.

Pay

Salary range: $59,738 - $82,867 annually.

Starting salary for lateral transfers based on experience:

• 2 years of experience: $70,138
• 3 years of experience: $73,528
• 4 years of experience: $77,002

Police officers hired after October 1, 2023, receive a $20,000 hiring incentive upon successful completion of the Field Training Officer Program, paid as a one-time lump sum.
