About the role
The Patient Services Representative at UPMC Mercy Vision Institute supports a high-volume ophthalmology practice, handling tasks such as registration, scheduling, insurance verification, and coordinating patient flow.
Responsibilities
- Help patients navigate the healthcare system by providing clear and understandable instructions.
- Assist with administrative duties including scanning of medical records and faxing.
- Guide patients through the use of self-arrival technology or check-in at the desk.
- Schedule or connect patients to resources for ancillary services.
- Understand and apply principles of service recovery.
- Assist patients in understanding financial responsibility and connecting them to advocacy resources.
- Obtain signatures for consent to treatment and confirm insurance benefits.
- Confirm/verify insurance benefits using online systems or phone inquiries.
- Promote MyUPMC patient portal and assist with patient registration.
- Collect copayments and other applicable payments.
- Provide a warm greeting for all patients.
- Register patients in Biometrics program and explain its benefits.
- Confirm and update patient registration information.
- Distribute and triage phone calls appropriately.
- Schedule follow-up appointments.
Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Proficient in personal computer-based applications and office equipment.
- Two years of experience in a medical, billing, fiscal, or customer service function.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and experience with Medipac, Epic, or similar health records systems is preferred.
