Within the Financial Clearance Center at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, this leadership role supports financial clearance operations, insurance verification, financial counseling, and exceptional patient experiences. The supervisor oversees staff, ensures compliance with procedures, and drives operational excellence across financial clearance workflows.

About the role

This position serves as a key resource for the Financial Clearance Center, helping staff navigate eligibility and benefits verification, payor requirements, patient financial assistance, and revenue cycle operations. The supervisor supports staff development, training, performance management, and continuous process improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate operational activities related to timely and complete verification of eligibility and benefits.
  • Ensure insurance verification is completed for each patient and maintain eligibility and benefits information.
  • Oversee financial pre-arrival processes and resolve insurance coverage issues, escalating complex matters as needed.
  • Review, track, and manage departmental work queues to ensure timely patient account resolution.
  • Demonstrate understanding of payor groups, health plans, and payor plan codes; maintain knowledge of contracted payors and spot agreements.
  • Provide direction to staff regarding interpretation of payor medical coverage policies and facilitate discussions with payors.
  • Perform quality assurance reviews and ensure compliance with Financial Clearance Center and institutional policies.
  • Monitor daily activity and performance metrics to improve processes, workflows, and procedures.
  • Assist with developing and revising continuous improvement plans.
  • Maintain knowledge of systems impacting admissions, verification, and patient access functions.
  • Review denial management processes and patient bad debt activities associated with eligibility functions.
  • Supervise financial counseling activities and ensure patients receive guidance on payment options, cost estimates, and assistance programs.
  • Facilitate administration of the Patient Financial Assistance process.
  • Act as a liaison among Patient Access, Clinical Operations, health plans, third-party vendors, and patients to resolve escalated issues.
  • Assist with establishing and delivering ongoing education and training for staff.
  • Hire, evaluate, mentor, and provide feedback to designated staff.
  • Provide leadership and operational guidance related to eligibility verification, financial counseling, and departmental objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Healthcare Administration (required).
  • 6 years of patient registration, medical financial counseling, and/or insurance verification experience in a healthcare setting, including 2 years of lead/supervisory experience (required).
  • Revenue cycle, patient escalation, and team collaboration experience (preferred).
  • May substitute required education with additional years of equivalent experience on a one-to-one basis.
  • Completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for up to 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • 5 years of utilization review with external payors within a healthcare or insurance setting (preferred).
  • Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.

Pay

Minimum $32.93 - Midpoint $41.11 - Maximum $49.28 per hour.

Schedule

Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, with occasional Saturdays as needed.
