About the Role

The Patient Care Associate (PCA) is a member of the patient care services team with primary responsibilities for technical, multi-skilled direct and indirect patient care activities. The PCA works under the supervision of a registered nurse who delegates tasks based on patient needs and the PCA's skills and abilities. The PCA reports all deviations from expected patient parameters to the registered nurse, collaborates with care team members, and promotes productive employee relations. The role demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement, teamwork, and the mission, vision, and values of the organization.

Responsibilities

• Performs a variety of basic patient care activities under the direction of a registered nurse.
• Reports changes in patient medical and/or emotional condition to the registered nurse.
• Assists nursing personnel in responding to various emergency patient situations.
• Assists patients in activities of daily living, including feeding, bathing, toileting, and other personal hygiene regimes.
• Follows all departmental policies, procedures, and objectives; continuous improvement initiatives; safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
• Demonstrates sensitivity to patient comfort and privacy and expresses interest in patient progress.
• Answers questions from patients and their families and explains procedures and processes within the scope of their training/abilities.
• Maintains confidentiality.
• Performs general clerical duties as required by unit needs, such as answering telephones and call lights, greeting patients and visitors.
• Enhances personal growth through participation in workshops, educational programs, in-service meetings, and reviewing current literature.
• Shares joint accountability for maintaining competencies.
• Performs other tasks as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Graduation from a school of practical nursing OR completion of one of the following:
  • A Certified PCA/PCT Program
  • A Certified Nurse Assistant Program or equivalent training
  • A Medical Assistant Program
  • An EMT program
  • A phlebotomy training program
• Six (6) months of direct patient care experience preferred.

Skills

• Good analytical and observational problem-solving skills.
• Mathematical ability to perform calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
• Ability to adapt to new technologies used in the work environment.
• High level of interpersonal and verbal skills, with a commitment to teamwork.
• Good reading, writing, and comprehension skills to understand and communicate procedures, processes, orders, methods, and standards.
• Physical ability to regularly (80-90% of work time) walk and stand; lift soiled linens and move equipment; assist patients in repositioning, transferring from bed to stretcher, and basic activities of daily living requiring lifting (very heavy, 60+ pounds), bending, pulling, pushing, standing, and walking.
• Visual acuity and manual dexterity.
• Ability to perform routine clerical functions such as answering telephones, taking messages, and retrieving basic computer information.
• Demonstrates willingness to contribute meaningfully to the work environment through behavior and attitude.
