About the Unit

This 39-bed Med Surg/Tele unit cares primarily for adult acute care patients with a wide variety of diagnoses and co-morbidities. Common conditions include cardiac and medical issues such as chest pain, pneumonia, renal failure, COPD, CHF, atrial fibrillation, GI bleed, and syncope. The unit also cares for post-surgical patients, including those recovering from pacemaker placement and Cardiac Cath/PCI, all requiring telemetry monitoring.

Medical 5 encourages staff involvement in shared governance and continued professional growth, and has been recognized as the Daisy Team of the Year. The unit includes a mix of new graduates and experienced nurses who collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to provide high-quality care.

About the Role

This role focuses on providing professional and nonprofessional nursing care services in accordance with physician orders. It involves performing nursing support duties, including basic patient care under the direction of physicians, mid-level practitioners, and registered nurses. This is a clinical technologist role requiring specialized knowledge and skills gained through vocational education, training, and experience.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct patient care, including personal hygiene, elimination, catheter care, vital signs, skin care, and mobility activities; documents care according to procedure.
• Reinforces belongings policy with patients and families, secures belongings, and documents appropriately.
• Provides nutritional support, assists with feedings as needed, and documents intake/output and weight.
• Performs selected and therapeutic procedures as outlined in competency and skills checklists.
• Cooperates with healthcare team members to achieve departmental objectives and maintain good employee, inter-departmental, and public relations.
• Sets up equipment and assists physicians/clinicians with treatments, dressings, and tests as assigned.
• Performs 12-lead EKGs, documents patient information, and ensures prompt delivery to the appropriate nurse or physician.
• Obtains, documents, processes, and accurately labels all specimens at the bedside according to policy; transports specimens as needed.
• Completes annual point-of-care testing in a timely manner.
• Participates in purposeful hourly rounding of patients in accordance with standards of excellence.
• Observes and communicates patients’ physical and emotional status; keeps RN informed of care delivered and patient responses; reports changes in condition promptly.
• Verifies patient identification via wristband and date of birth before providing care or performing tests; notifies RN if wristband is missing.
• Shares information at staff meetings and functions as a patient observer following all assigned roles and responsibilities.
• Answers patients’ call lights in a timely and courteous manner using AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You).
• Adheres to precaution measures for patient, visitor, and hospital personnel safety; maintains basic principles of infection control.
• Demonstrates appropriate actions and understanding of role in codes and disaster situations.
• Assists in administering post-mortem care.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• Four (4) years of healthcare experience and nursing service experience.
• Certified patient care associate, clinical associate, certified nursing assistant, or equivalent.

Skills & Abilities

• Ability to read, write, and comprehend medical terminology.
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Able to work with detailed, confidential material.
• Computer experience.
• Demonstrates knowledge of asepsis and sterile technique.
• Demonstrates knowledge and skill in performing all point-of-care testing done on the unit.
• Demonstrates knowledge and skill in providing age-appropriate care to the population served.

Physical Requirements

• Lifting up to 30-35 lbs and turning patients.
• Prolonged standing and walking.
• Occasional twisting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, sitting, kneeling, and squatting.
• Manual dexterity for fine hand manipulation, including operating a computer keyboard.
• Ability to see computer screens and reports.

Schedule

36 hours per week, Night Shift (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM).

Pay

Pay range: $19.77 - $24.57 per hour.
