Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of an RN or his/her designee, the Patient Care Technician will assist the RN and MD in providing direct care to patients according to age-specific needs. Patient types include neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and older adult.
Key areas of responsibility
- Model quality patient/customer service by demonstrating a willingness to serve all customers at all times.
- Maintain awareness of patient needs while utilizing tact, discretion, and compassion in responding to those needs.
- Absorb and record vital signs, blood glucose, EKGs, and patient intake/output while reporting any abnormal findings to the Registered Nurse.
- Collaborate with the nursing team to ambulate, transfer, and/or turn patients as appropriate and document. Always maintain proper body mechanics.
- Performs basic therapeutic measures under the direction of the Registered Nurse to assist in achieving patient care outcomes.
- Makes accurate strip interpretations per unit protocol.
- Accurately performs phlebotomy for the collection of blood and blood cultures.
- Accurately collects and obtains specimens, sputum, urine, stool.
- Assists MD with surgical procedures (i.e., set-up, dressing applications).
- Properly fits crutches and reviews, instructs patient in crutch walking and applies orthopedic devices (i.e., sling, write splint, knee immobilizer).
- Performs daily equipment checks.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
- Minimum Requirements:
- Education: High School or equivalency.
- Experience: Certified Nurses Aid Certificate, EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) with clinical experience required, Nursing Student OR Successful completion of Windham PCT 3 boot-camp.
- Licensure, Certification, Registration: BLS Certification required or competition within the first three months of employment.
- Knowledge, Skills And Abilities: Knowledge of medical terminology and computer skills preferred; Knowledge of arrhythmia detection and phlebotomy preferred.
