Why Does the Job Exist?

This position will provide care and monitor clients with problematic behaviors. Incumbent will monitor the physical and emotional well-being and report immediate concerns to the Nursing and/or medical staff. Incumbent will participate in treatment team meetings.

How Does It Get Done?

  • Take and record measures of patients' physical condition, using devices such as thermometers or blood pressure gauges.
  • Monitor patients' physical and emotional well-being and report unusual behavior or physical ailments to medical staff.
  • Provide nursing, psychiatric, or personal care to mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, or mentally retarded patients.
  • Observe and influence patients' behavior, communicating and interacting with them and teaching, counseling, or befriending them.
  • Collaborate with or assist doctors, psychologists, or rehabilitation therapists in working with mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, or developmentally disabled patients to treat, rehabilitate, and return patients to the community.

Residents at a long-term care facility.

Ideal Candidate

  • The ability to monitor patients' physical and emotional well-being and report unusual behavior or physical ailments to medical staff.
  • The ability to work with mentally ill clients.
  • The ability to develop and teach strategies to promote client wellness and independence.

Minimum Qualification

  • A High School Diploma and one (1) year of experience as it pertains to the essential duties of the classification.
  • Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling one (1) year may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements

  • This position is designated as safety sensitive.
  • Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.
  • Will be screened for tuberculosis (TB) upon hire.
  • Employment is subject to nationwide criminal background check (Sections 29-17-2 through 29-17-5 NMSA 1978 and 7.1.9.1 through 7.1.9.11 NMAC) and is conditional pending results.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Certified Nursing Assistant Certification from the State of New Mexico or must receive Certified Nursing Assistant Certification within four (4) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

  • Works throughout the nursing service area (i.e., nurses' stations, resident rooms, etc.).
  • Incumbent will work with mentally and/or behaviorally challenged residents who may exhibit unpredictable behavior in stressful situations.
  • Moves intermittently during working hours.
  • Is subject to frequent interruptions.
  • Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc.,
  • Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors.
  • Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department directors.
  • Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary.
  • Is subject to call back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.).
  • Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.,
