Patient Access Rep ED - ED Registration - Per Diem 8 Hours Days (7:00 AM to 3:30 PM) (Union, Non Exempt)
Under the direction of the Admitting Manager, the Patient Access Representative is responsible for interviewing incoming patients (inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department) to obtain all pertinent data for admission and produce a complete and accurate admission record. This includes medical record information, as well as demographic and financial related information. Responsibilities include answering inquiries related to admissions, collecting deposits or payments, interacting with nursing units and ancillary departments, and providing directions within the hospital.

- Acknowledging patients or guests and their requests.
- Appearing professional in dress, grooming, and hygiene.
- Assisting in the training of new employees.
- Demonstrating awareness and sensitivity to the rights of patients and significant others.
- Documenting any financial arrangements in the patient’s account notes and notifying the Admitting Manager or Business Office Manager of problem accounts.
- Exhibiting concern, tact, and discretion in all working relationships.
- Functioning with an awareness of safety issues and reporting unsafe conditions.
- Upholding the highest service standards regarding patient care and making patients’ needs the first priority.
- Working and being cross-trained in all areas, including Inpatient, Outpatient, Bed Board, and Emergency Room.
- Being familiar with the hospital layout to direct patients or guests to the proper destination.
- Being physically able to push a wheelchair.
- Meeting staffing needs, including availability for overtime, holidays, and shift changes.
- Remaining informed and compliant with HIPAA, EMTALA, the Fair Debt and Collection Practices Act, Medicare Secondary Payer, and other relevant laws and regulations.
- Staying informed about PPO, HMO, Medicare, Medi-Cal, and indigent service programs for timely claim processing.
- Offering assistance promptly, cordially, and completely.
- Prioritizing patient care in all aspects of registration, including comfort with sick patients and ability to summon medical assistance; maintaining annual BLS certification.
- Monitoring patient valuables according to hospital policy.
- Performing various other duties as assigned.
- Promoting unity and teamwork among co-workers and other departments.
- Handling all confidential information appropriately, both at work and away from the facility.
- Completing the patient’s electronic medical record and ensuring timely distribution of paperwork.
- Obtaining Advance Directive information from patients and accurately entering data into the system.
- Discussing financial responsibility with patients, collecting deposits, co-payments, and arranging payment plans as needed.
- Collecting all patient-related information to produce a complete and accurate admission record, including insurance and demographic details.
- Understanding and participating in the organization-wide Performance Improvement Program.
- Explaining consent forms, Advance Directives, and other required documents to patients before obtaining signatures.
- Meeting department productivity goals: registering a minimum of 20 patients per shift, completing registrations within 20 minutes, and maintaining an account accuracy rate of at least 80%.
- Completing and printing shift logs in the Emergency Department.
- Completing and demonstrating competency in all designated courses within 90 days of hire (new employees) or by specified deadlines (current employees).
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 2 years of customer service experience.
- BLS certification required; must provide certificate within 30 days of hire if not already certified.
- M.A.B. certification required within 6 months of hire.
Pay
The hourly salary range for this position is $25.75 - $34.65. Factors considered when extending an offer include scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal/state/local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, and external market considerations.
Schedule
- Per Diem, 8-hour shifts (7:00 AM to 3:30 PM).
- Must be available to work overtime, holidays, and shift changes as needed.
