Job Description

Aid in drafting and electronically filing various legal documents with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) pertaining to patent prosecution of applications, including but not limited to office action amendments and responses, requests for continued examination, continuation and divisional applications, information disclosure statements, supplemental application data sheets, sequence listings, extensions of time, terminal disclaimers, various petitions, notices of appeal, appeal briefs, corrected drawings, assignment recordations, post-grant proceedings, and other documents as necessary.

  • Provide expertise for specific client requirements and needs regarding document filing and reporting, utilizing client extranets and secure data sites.
  • Format utility/provisional specifications for filing in the USPTO and develop and maintain structural and formatting requirements as outlined in the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure (MPEP).
  • Draft, prepare, and proofread written correspondence, including emails, memoranda, and other documentation for internal personnel, clients, and assignees.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of patent rules and regulations.
  • Manage and maintain docket calendars for assigned clients, independently calculating docket dates as a secondary review, and coordinating with docketing personnel to ensure accuracy and compliance with due dates.
  • Follow Fenwick IP-specific workflow processes and procedures to ensure timely and accurate delivery of work.
  • Create and maintain file integrity of electronic documents and correspondence.
  • Assume backup responsibilities for team members as needed.
  • Flexible and dependable, capable of working overtime as required.

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Proficiency in navigating Patent Center, WIPO, Assignment Center, and PTO Financial Manager.
  • Comprehensive understanding of U.S. patents.
  • Experience in preparing complex Information Disclosure Statements (IDS) and staying updated on related rules and processes, including correct referencing.
  • Strong knowledge of IP docketing systems.
  • Ability to multitask in a deadline-driven environment.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Initiative and teamwork skills.
  • Excellent proofreading abilities, including grammar, typographical, and spelling accuracy.
  • Effective communication skills, including writing, speaking, and organizational abilities.
  • Confidentiality and respect for firm personnel.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of relevant work experience in a patent prosecution practice, with preference for experience in a law firm setting.

  • The anticipated base salary range for this position is $94,000 - $141,250, depending on the role, qualifications, and location.
  • A discretionary bonus for eligible employees may also be available based on performance.
