About the role
The tutoring center at Ivy Tech Community College – Sellersburg Campus serves as an academic support program for students needing additional assistance with specific courses. Tutors should be prepared to share effective study strategies and have a passion for seeing students succeed, with experience working with diverse student groups and populations.
Responsibilities
- Meet with students in individual, shared, and group tutoring formats to enhance, support, and clarify concepts discussed in class lectures, readings, handouts, etc., for the subject(s) hired.
- Provide guidance in acquiring and applying study skills methods.
- Serve as a link to other college resources.
- Complete all paperwork and recordkeeping as requested by the supervisor (time cards, tutoring logs, evaluations, etc.).
- Participate in initial and ongoing training programs as required.
- Consult with faculty to help students meet course learning objectives.
- Conduct all activities with appreciation and respect for diversity of people, styles, and views.
- Demonstrate strong customer service and student advocacy skills through a positive attitude, approachability, adaptability, and problem-solving.
- Dress and behave in a professional manner (as outlined in the Tutor Training Manual).
- Perform other duties logically associated with the position as assigned.
- Conduct responsibilities within the parameters of FERPA, regulatory requirements, and professional standards.
Requirements
- Be a current student who has completed at least one semester at Ivy Tech OR have at least one semester of experience as a tutor, faculty member, or other participation in a learning community (e.g., retired high-school teacher or recent college graduate).
- If an Ivy Tech student: have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, a “B” or better in the course they will tutor, and no campus disciplinary record.
- Ability to communicate well orally and work with diverse student populations.
- Maintain confidentiality of tutoring sessions.
- Willingness to work under supervision.
- Complete eight hours of basic training and participate in subsequent regular training sessions.
