Part-Time Political Science Instructor (Pool)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Pay

Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based on education and credited experience. Initial placement ranges:

• Lab Course (Salary Schedule HB): $89.20 – $130.94 per hour
• Lecture Course (Salary Schedule HC): $103.85 – $151.07 per hour

Assignments are semester-based as needed.

Responsibilities

• Teach classes as assigned from the regular Political Science Department curriculum
• Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours
• Maintain expertise in current teaching and discipline technologies
• Perform other duties required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and institutional needs

The College offers day and evening classes.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master’s or higher in political science, government, or international relations
• OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s or higher in economics, history, public administration, social science, sociology, any ethnic studies, Juris Doctor (J.D.), or Legum Baccalaureus (LL.B.)
• OR the equivalent (see below)

Demonstrated:

• Cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff
• Commitment to equity-minded practice both within and outside the classroom

Equivalency Options: Applicants may submit evidence for one or more of the following:

• Degree Equivalence: A degree with similar content to those listed, where the degree title or coursework differs slightly
• Academic Background Equivalence: At least 24 semester units in the academic field, plus:
  • A broad cultural education (e.g., general education requirements for a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree)
  • Detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor (e.g., coursework required for the degree major)
• Professional Achievement Equivalence: Evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the field, including:
  • Preparation, teaching experience, work experience, publications, portfolios, speaking engagements, or demonstrated ability equivalent to minimum qualifications

Knowledge

• Political science and recent successful experience in teaching or preparation to teach college-level courses in the discipline
• Teaching methods that emphasize cooperation, collaboration, and active student engagement to foster independent, creative learners with higher-order thinking skills
• Use of technology in teaching

Skills and Abilities

• Organize and explain materials for students with diverse abilities, preparation levels, and cultural experiences
• Develop instructional learning outcomes and assess student achievement
• Teach theoretical and practical applications of subject matter appropriate to students’ abilities
• Understand and commit to the role and purpose of the community college
• Uphold established academic standards and integrate writing skills across the curriculum
