Part-Time Photography Instructor (Pool)

About the Role

This is an exempt, adjunct faculty position focused on teaching photography with an emphasis on film-based technologies, darkroom practices, and digital and experimental photography. Assignments are semester-based and may include in-person, hybrid, or online modalities.

Pay

Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based on education and credited experience. Initial placement ranges are:

• Lab Course (Salary Schedule HB): $89.20 – $130.94 per hour
• Lecture Course (Salary Schedule HC): $103.85 – $151.07 per hour

Responsibilities

• Teach lecture and lab sections of photography in various modalities (in-person, hybrid, online), with a focus on film-based technologies, darkroom practices, and digital/experimental photography
• Assist in curriculum revisions and new course development, including student learning outcomes and assessment processes
• Participate in the development and/or selection of course materials, equipment, and technology to enhance department offerings
• Consult with students during regularly scheduled office and lab hours
• Maintain expertise in current teaching methodologies and curricula across modalities
• Monitor and maintain the health and safety of the darkroom, studio, students, faculty, and staff
• Serve on department, division, and college committees
• Organize student photography exhibitions and represent the program on campus and in the community
• Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and institutional needs

Requirements

• Master’s or higher in photography, fine arts, or art OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s or higher in art history or humanities OR equivalent qualifications (see Equivalency section below)
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff

Qualifications

Knowledge Of

• Beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels of darkroom and digital photography (in-person and online)
• Safety practices in the darkroom lab
• Darkroom equipment and chemistry
• Digital photography and the imaging production process, including Adobe Photoshop
• Foundational principles of art (composition, color, etc.), the craft of photography, and its artistic/technical applications
• History and cultural perspectives of photography, including its integration with art, social impacts, and evolution of materials/techniques
• Technology use in art education and willingness to expand its use

Skills And Abilities

• Active practice as a studio artist, evidenced by a broad range of independent artwork and exhibitions
• Proficiency in using film-based photographic cameras and associated equipment
• Ability to demonstrate studio lighting, photography techniques, and safe practices
• Capacity to reflect on and evaluate one’s pedagogy critically
• Skill in organizing and explaining materials to suit students’ abilities and learning styles in both developmental and transfer courses
• Use of teaching methods that engage students actively, promote critical thinking, and encourage self-regulated learning
• Instructional methods that emphasize group cooperation, collaboration, cultural sensitivity, and interdisciplinary approaches
• Skill in creating digital portfolios of personal or professional artwork
• Ability to maintain currency in the discipline and related technology
• Ability to motivate students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds
• Consistent and appropriate assessment of student progress
• Collaboration with faculty and staff to enhance instruction, curriculum, laboratory preparations, and student success
• Contribution to department, division, and college activities

Preferred Qualifications

• College-level experience teaching a range of darkroom, digital, and experimental photography classes in different modalities (in-person and online)
• Demonstrated record of photography exhibits
• Willingness to examine and remediate instructional, relational, and classroom practices to support racially minoritized and disproportionately impacted students
• Experience addressing inequity in the classroom and on campus
• Expertise in culturally responsive teaching in photography
• Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within art courses and classrooms
• Knowledge of the importance of AANAPISI (Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution) and HSI (Hispanic-Serving Institution) designations for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices

• Degree Equivalence: Possession of a degree(s) with similar content to those listed, where the degree title or area of expertise differs slightly but coursework aligns with the discipline.

• Environmental: Typical on-site office environment with potential for telework participation. Frequent hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and online.
