About the role
The Part-Time Food Service Assistant supports the Food Service Manager in all aspects of meal preparation, record-keeping, and sanitation.
Responsibilities
- Provides Nutritious Meals
- Work with Food Service Manager to prepare nutritious breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack.
- Assist with preparing at least one baked snack each week and one fresh fruit or vegetable each day.
- Follow approved menus and production records; transport meals to other centers if needed.
- Prepare foods that meet special dietary requirements.
- Maintains Accurate Records
- Maintain a running list of foods and supplies needed; assist with placing orders from approved vendors.
- Check invoices for deliveries, restock shelves, and assist with inventory at the end of each menu cycle.
- Maintain production records and meal counts after each service; post current menu attractively.
- Post information regarding special diets and allergies; follow CACFP meal pattern and portion size requirements.
- Observe meals served in each class and complete quarterly Atmosphere & Environment Observation.
- Assist with monthly kitchen observation and safety checklist; maintain inventory for kitchen equipment and supplies.
- Maintains a Safe and Sanitary Food Service Environment
- Sweep and clean kitchen floors as needed; clean kitchen at the end of each day.
- Keep pantry clean and organized; wash and air-dry all dishes and put them away daily.
- Wear clean and appropriate uniform, head covering, and shoes.
- Clean milk dispenser, refrigerator, freezer, and ice machines as needed.
- Sanitize all food preparation areas and utensils after each use; wear back brace when lifting.
- Store food off the floor and away from chemicals; keep cabinets and drawers orderly.
- Check each food delivery for shortages, damage, or improper substitutions before accepting.
- Label and store all food items properly; label dates and store refrigerated foods in airtight containers.
- Supports Center’s Goals and Objectives
- Assist with cooking projects and nutritional education in the classroom.
- Cooperate with preparation of birthday cakes and other cooking projects.
- Prepare refreshments for meetings and special events.
- Attend all staff meetings and parent meetings as requested.
- Contribute nutritional information for the newsletter quarterly.
- Work with special needs children and families.

- Maintain good attendance; report to the kitchen according to schedule.
- Share new recipes with other Food Service Managers.
- Apply knowledge gained from food service training and courses.
- Attend food shows; follow center rules regarding breaks and telephone use.
- Report planned absences to the Center Director before the workday begins.
- Support the center’s code of ethical conduct regarding confidentiality.
- Display understanding of CACFP regulations, licensing requirements, and Head Start Program Performance Standards.
- Maintain a pleasant facial expression and manner during work hours.

Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Background check, fingerprinting, and drug test required prior to hire.
- Must be comfortable handling multiple situations at once and prepared to manage accidents and emergencies.
Skills
- Knowledge of nutritional values of foods and USDA meal patterns.
- Ability to relate positively to children and adults.
- Ability to lift at least 35 lbs unassisted and 50 lbs with assistance.
Physical Demands
- Visually observe children from all areas of the classroom and playground from a distance of at least 20 feet.
- Lift and carry children and equipment (35 lbs unassisted, 50 lbs with assistance).
- Sit on the floor and stand up independently to interact with children.
- Clean and maintain equipment and the center.
- Work in a busy, occasionally noisy environment with multiple activities happening simultaneously.
- Use arms, legs, and whole body for climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.
- Ability to learn and use technology; pass a hearing test.
- Take precautions to ensure health and safety due to potential exposure to illness or contagions.
