Part-Time Faculty: AAS 231: African American Literature to 1900: An Introduction (Fall 2026)

About the role

The Department of African American Studies at Syracuse University seeks a part-time instructor to teach “African American Literature to 1900: An Introduction” at the undergraduate level in the Fall 2026 semester with the start date of August 17, 2026.

Responsibilities

• Teaching one section of AAS 231: African American Literature to 1900: An Introduction.
• Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
• Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
• Preparing lectures, projects or other student assignments.
• Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours of two hours per week.
• Holding regular preparatory meetings with Graduate Teaching Assistants who lead Discussion Sections: 12:45-2:05 and 3:45-5:05 pm on Mondays.
• Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the class.
• Meting all designated class periods.
• If you are unable to meet with your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute.
• You must also notify the department chair or their designated contact of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.
• Working with the academic unit to maintain student learning outcomes.
• Submitting completed final grades according to University regulations.
• Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
• Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
• Completing all other course-related duties as outlined by your department’s policies for part-time instructors.

Qualifications

• Masters degree required; Doctorate (or ABD) preferred.
• Doctoral training in Black Studies and Humanities preferred.
