Part-Time Faculty: AAS 201: Writing About Black Culture (Fall 2026)

Syracuse University’s Department of African American Studies invites applications for a part-time instructor to teach two undergraduate sections of AAS 201: Writing About Black Culture (3 credits each) during the Fall 2026 semester, beginning 8/24/2026. The course develops expository writing and analytic skills through engagement with diverse topics and media that have shaped African American print, visual, and sound cultural production. Both sections will meet in-person on the Syracuse University campus. Pay will be determined by the candidate’s per-credit-rate history within the hiring department. Course offerings are contingent on funding availability and enrollment.

About the Role

This is a part-time instructional position focused on teaching two sections of AAS 201. The instructor will guide students in developing writing and critical-thinking skills through the exploration of African American cultural production.

Responsibilities

• Teach two sections of AAS 201: Writing About Black Culture.
• Develop and/or update a class syllabus.
• Order appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
• Prepare lectures, projects, or other student assignments.
• Maintain two hours of regularly scheduled office hours per week.
• Deliver instruction tailored to the competencies and performance levels of the class.
• Attend all designated class periods; reschedule or arrange for a substitute in cases of illness or emergency, and notify the department chair.
• Collaborate with the academic unit to maintain student learning outcomes.
• Submit completed final grades according to University regulations.
• Grade student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
• Provide departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
• Complete all other course-related duties as outlined by departmental policies for part-time instructors.

Requirements

• Master’s degree required; doctorate (or ABD) preferred.
• Doctoral training in Black Studies and Humanities preferred.
