Duties And Responsibilities

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position.

  • Teach courses in barbering according to State Board standards
  • Provide leadership in curriculum development and selection of instructional materials
  • Work with industry through advisory committees and other professional groups
  • Engage in a continuing program of personal professional development
  • Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours
  • Serve as a member of Division and college committees
  • Perform other professional duties as required by contract and general institutional needs

Employment Standards (acquired through education, training, and/or experience)

  • Knowledge Of Current California State Board standards and requirements for licensure
  • All phases of salon work and advanced teaching techniques relating to barbering and a commitment to staying abreast of the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology
  • NIC Testing Methods
  • Current educational tools
  • Computer-based tools relevant to the field

Skills And Abilities

  • Basic and advanced hair styling, chemical reformation, hair coloring, salon management, competition hair-styling, cosmetician science, manicure science, and fashion concepts, including successful industry work experience in the discipline and preparation to teach college-level courses related to the teaching assignment
  • Use teaching methods that actively engage students and encourage self-regulated learning
  • Apply instructional methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration, and that reflect intercultural and interdisciplinary approaches to subject matter
  • Use technology to assist students in the acquisition, analysis, and evaluation of knowledge and skills
  • Motivate students to develop higher-order thinking skills and organize and explain materials in ways appropriate to students' abilities
  • Monitor student progress consistently and appropriately

Job Requirements

  • Any bachelor's degree or higher and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
  • Professional experience is required when the applicant possesses a master's degree.
  • The professional experience required must be directly related to the faculty member's teaching assignment.
  • Possession of a current California State Board of Barbering or Cosmetology License
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice both within and outside of the classroom.
