The Montgomery County Department of Parks—Southern Parks Division is seeking an experienced, dynamic, highly organized, and professional Athletic Fields Parks/Facilities Maintenance Leader-CDL to join the Meadowbrook Maintenance Facility in Chevy Chase, MD. This role supports both local and regional recreation across some of Montgomery County’s most densely populated areas, maintaining over 200 parks and operating a large fleet of equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Athletic Field Maintenance Leadership
    • Lead daily field maintenance to ensure safe, game-ready conditions
    • Oversee setup, repair, turf care, and field improvements
    • Monitor and resolve turf, drainage, and wear issues
    • Supervise staff and ensure safety and quality standards
    • Support parks and facility operations as needed
  • Equipment & Vehicle Operation
    • Operate and maintain field equipment (tractors, mowers, aerators)
    • Transport equipment using trucks, trailers, and CDL vehicles
    • Perform hauling and seasonal tasks (e.g., snow removal)
  • Administrative Tasks
    • Manage staffing, schedules, and daily work assignments
    • Track work orders, logs, and field activities in EAM systems
    • Communicate via email and maintain accurate records
    • Train staff and complete required certifications

Requirements

  • High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED)
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in ground maintenance, golf course maintenance, building maintenance, or park maintenance (or an equivalent combination of education and experience totaling five years)
  • Valid driver’s license in accordance with State and Commission rules, free of restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit driving Commission vehicles
  • Pass Commission medical examination
  • Obtain a Class A-Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 12 months of hire
  • Depending on assignment, may require within 12 months of hire:
    • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Applicator certification
    • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Professional Fertilizer Applicator certification
    • National Playground Safety Institute certification

Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong turf maintenance and problem-solving skills
  • Effective leadership, communication, and teamwork abilities
  • Ability to manage time-sensitive operations and resources
  • Tech-savvy with reporting systems; safety-focused
  • Proficient in ArcGIS, MS Office, and enterprise systems
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and safety standards
  • Playground Safety certification preferred
  • Bilingual skills a plus
  • Public sector or parks experience preferred
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds

Working Conditions

  • Primarily works outside, exposed to weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g., bees, hornets, wasps) and plants (e.g., poison ivy)
  • May be required to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and on-call for emergencies
  • Some pressure to meet deadlines
