About the role

The Montgomery County Department of Parks—Southern Parks Division is seeking an experienced, proactive, well-organized, and professional Parks/Facilities Maintenance Leader-CDL to oversee the custodial program under the Meadowbrook Maintenance Facility in Chevy Chase, MD. This role leads daily custodial maintenance of park facilities, supervises staff, schedules work, and ensures clean, safe environments across some of the most densely populated areas of Montgomery County.

The Southern Parks Division maintains over 200 parks and operates a large fleet of equipment to keep park facilities, athletic fields, trails, and playgrounds safe, functional, and ready for daily use.

Responsibilities

  • Lead daily custodial operations to maintain clean, safe facilities.
  • Schedule work, supervise staff, and ensure sanitation standards.
  • Oversee cleaning, minor repairs, and general park support.
  • Operate and maintain custodial equipment and tools.
  • Transport supplies using park vehicles; some vehicles require a CDL.
  • Perform seasonal tasks such as snow and leaf removal.
  • Manage staffing, schedules, and work orders.
  • Track activities, supplies, and communications.
  • Coordinate services and ensure required training completion.
  • On-call for emergencies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in ground maintenance, golf course maintenance, building maintenance, or park maintenance. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
  • Valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. License must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit driving Commission vehicles.
  • Pass Commission medical examination.
  • Must obtain a Class-A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 12 months of hire.
  • Depending on assignment, may require additional certifications within 12 months of hire, including:
    • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Applicator certification.
    • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Professional Fertilizer Applicator certification.
    • National Playground Safety Institute certification.

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily works outside.
  • May be required to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Occasionally exposed to weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g., bees, hornets, wasps) and plants (e.g., poison ivy).
  • Some pressure to meet deadlines.
