Parks & Beautification Area Caretaker

This is a seasonal position within the Parks & Recreation Department. Hours of operation are 7:00am - 3:30pm. All scheduled shifts will occur within that window of time. Employment with the City of Pocatello is contingent on passing a background check.

About the role

Perform manual, skilled, and unskilled labor in the cleaning, maintenance and repair of grounds and facilities at and around City parks/facilities and on or adjacent to public rights-of-way. Performs general construction, maintenance, and repairs to a wide array of City buildings and infrastructure.

The job requires working knowledge of construction and landscape techniques and general cleaning and janitorial methods, the ability to utilize hand and power tools safely, and the ability to maintain a collaborative and cooperative working relationship with elected and appointed officials, other City employees, organizations, and the public. Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.

The work environment includes indoor conditions, outdoor weather conditions, wet and humid conditions, areas with dust, odors, mist, gases, or other airborne matter, and exposure to mechanical hazards. This position may require working days, evenings, and weekends as needed.

Responsibilities

• Perform general maintenance and basic horticultural work for parks and beautification areas, including:
  • Clean-up and disposal of trash and debris
  • Planting of flowers
  • Minor pruning of shrubs and trees
  • Weed eating, pulling, and minor spraying
  • Watering and janitorial tasks
• Drive a City vehicle to various park and beautification sites as assigned

Requirements

• Must be 16 years of age or older
• High school diploma or GED preferred
• Two to five years of experience may be required
• Specialized certifications, construction, and/or supervisory experience may be required
• Valid Idaho driver’s license is required
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Physical Requirements

• Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, climb ladders, and work at heights or in confined spaces
• Requires hand/finger dexterity to handle materials and manipulate tools
• Must be able to operate job-related equipment and drive a vehicle
• Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance
• Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform essential functions and interact with the public
