Park Manager 1 (NY HELPS) Bethpage State Park

Responsibilities

  • Recognize operational needs and assign tasks to park staff, including cashiers, clubhouse maintenance, picnic and polo maintenance, and golf operations.
  • Assist in daily revenue management (golf and VUF) and oversee cashiers and business office procedures for both opening and closing shifts.
  • Interface with the golf course agronomy team on daily course management, including weather delays, cart limitations, and scheduled maintenance, and communicate updates to the public.
  • Oversee and coordinate park-wide activity schedules and permit usage for picnic, polo, tennis, golf, softball, and catering concessions.
  • Perform and oversee audits and inspections of multiple concessionaires, including catering, pro shop, tennis, and polo.
  • Address public inquiries, complaints, and concerns regarding park operations.
  • Hire, schedule, and ensure daily operational needs are met for park staff.
  • Maintain park grounds, conduct inspections, and ensure parking lots, restrooms, and public areas are clean and safe.
  • Responsible for opening and/or closing the park based on assigned shifts.
  • Assist in overseeing work order submissions, playground inspections, and mandated staff training.
  • Support larger golf events, such as the PGA Championship, Ryder Cup, LPGA Championship, NY State Open, and AJGA RLX Classic.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). To be considered, candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position.

  • Option 1: Six years of experience working in a park, recreational facility, or campus* in any two of the following functional areas: administration (business, personnel, finance); capital or operational planning; recreational programming; public relations/visitor services; maintenance; or environmental education/interpretation. This experience must include two years of supervisory experience.
  • Option 2: A bachelor's or higher-level degree in environmental education, environmental management, environmental policy, environmental sustainability, forestry, golf course management, historic preservation, horticulture, natural resources management, park administration, park management, or recreation management and two years of supervisory experience in a park, recreational facility, or campus* as described in the functional areas listed above.

*For this examination, a park, recreational facility, or campus is defined as a location offering at least three of the following: athletic fields, skating rink, campgrounds, golf courses, hiking trails, historic structures, marinas, picnic areas, playgrounds, recreation programs, swimming facilities, or education, environmental, or interpretive programming.

Non-qualifying experience includes: working at a gym, ski area/resort, or sports stadiums.

Non-qualifying degrees include: accounting, anthropology, archaeology, biology (all majors), business, history, hospitality, physical education, recreation therapy, and sports management.

Minimum Qualification Substitution: An associate degree in a related field can substitute for two years of specialized experience; a bachelor’s degree for four years; a master’s degree for five years; and a doctorate for six years. Degrees must be awarded by an accredited institution. For degrees obtained outside the U.S., independent verification of equivalency is required.

Candidates may also qualify for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from an appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer under Civil Service Law.

Pay

Hiring rate: $70,951 (combines statutory hiring rate of $66,951 with a $4,000 Downstate Adjustment).

Job rate: $89,138 (combines statutory job rate of $85,138 with a $4,000 Downstate Adjustment).

Schedule

  • Must be available to work a variable schedule, including weekends, holidays, and/or evening shifts.

Operating Needs

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows operation of a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.

Additional Notes

NY HELPS Program: This title may be filled via a permanent non-competitive appointment. Employees hired under NY HELPS will have their status converted to competitive within one year, with full rights and privileges. While serving in a NY HELPS title, employees may participate in promotion examinations for which they are qualified. Promotional appointments are restricted until the position is covered into the competitive class or the employee obtains permanent competitive status.
