About the role

Position: Park Maintenance I/II – Regional Parks (Full-Time, Non-Exempt)

Job Duties:

  • Maintain site/turf by aerating, slashing and applying top dressing;
  • Maintain flowerbeds and vegetation in park sites and other District sites.
  • Perform a variety of general groundskeeping duties including mowing and edging, raking, weeding, trimming trees, fertilizing, transplanting trees and shrubs and pruning hedges and shrubs;
  • Plant lawns, trees, shrubs, hedges and flowers.
  • Diagnose disease and pest conditions; spray landscaped areas with low-toxic herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and insecticides; prepare mixtures in proper proportions; locate, trap and bait rodents.
  • Prepare and maintain ball fields, athletic fields and surrounding landscape areas; prepare fields for athletic competition; drag, repair, prepare and maintain athletic fields; fill infield holes; screen the field; sweep dugouts and clean bleacher areas.
  • Mark with appropriate marking materials or equipment to delineate the area of play and restricting lines as prescribed and established by league and sport rules; grade and water infields and build mounds according to specifications.
  • Prepare, maintain, and install signs and playground equipment as required.
  • Inspect, repair and replace automatic and manual sprinkler valves, irrigation lines and sprinkler heads; inspect functioning of controllers and repair as necessary; inspect and repair backflow prevention devices.
  • Train and provide work direction to assigned seasonal and part-time personnel.
  • Collect trash and perform general grounds cleaning (restroom, picnic shelters, tennis/volleyball courts, etc.).
  • Operate riding and push mowers, edgers, weed eaters, blower, rakes, brooms, shovels, hose, chain saws, and other grounds maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Clean and perform routine maintenance on grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Install, operate, maintain and repair sprinkler/drainage systems as assigned.
  • Maintain records of work performed including preventive maintenance and needed repairs (field reports).

Work Environment:

  • 95% or more of the work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions and requires the ability to drive to park and building locations.
  • May be exposed to extreme cold, heat, wet, snow, humid or icy conditions.
  • Frequent exposure to noise, fumes, dusts, mists, gases, grasses, molds, fertilizers, solvents, oils, and greases.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to frequently sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, reach, lift and exhibit manual dexterity with the ability to handle objects.
  • Must be able to occasionally push, pull or balance.
  • Upper body strength is a requisite to lift /move a maximum of 80 pounds unassisted and lift /move a maximum of 160 pounds with assistance.
  • Requires the ability to communicate.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age
  • Graduation from high school or completion of GED.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Must be insurable by the District carrier at the onset and for the duration of employment.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment involved in the development and maintenance of landscaped areas and turf and sports turf practices.
  • Requires knowledge of the chemical and cultural controls for disease, including certification for and the proper usage of agrochemicals, fertilizers, and other soil additives.
  • Requires knowledge of the operation of irrigation systems.
  • Ability to operate a variety of power, hand tools, and landscape maintenance heavy equipment such as, mowers, backhoes, aerators, etc.
  • Use of modern office equipment and procedures (computer, copier, fax, phone, tablet, smart phone, etc.)
  • Proficiency with applicable computer software applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Required Experience:

  • One (1) year labor experience in park or landscape maintenance, horticulture, forestry or a closely related field, or any equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Four (4) years labor experience in park or landscape maintenance, horticulture, forestry or a closely related field, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two (2) years experience operating commercial landscape equipment.
  • One (1) year experience as a crew leader preferred.
