Duties/Responsibilities

  • Guides and works through lesson plans with students by correcting tasks, interpreting class assignments, reinforcing as necessary, and recording and charting results as established by the Special Ed. Teacher.
  • Makes sure students understand tests and informal quizzes, and assesses mastery of learned materials.
  • Instructs and assists students in getting to classes and/or job sites; during meals, showers, and bathroom training; or other activities planned for the students' day.
  • Maintains order and monitors behavior of students for appropriateness and need for discipline and positive reinforcement, including when an instructor is not present or when off-site.
  • Shares ideas, identifies problems or aids in problem solving to teachers and/or students.
  • Aids mainstream teachers in classroom by following lesson plans and assisting in projects/assignments.
  • Prepares and/or assembles materials for projects, games, bulletin boards or as assigned.
  • Typifies, utilizes computers as directed by teachers, files, and requests items needed by staff and students for classrooms, meetings, presentations or conferences.
  • Supports teachers in carrying out students' Individualized Educational Plans.
  • Where identified in the Individualized Educational Plan, provides work skill training and job-coaching at the job site.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Associates degree in Education or related field preferred.
  • Prior experience as a paraprofessional preferred.
  • Experience working with students with special needs preferred.
  • Knowledge of practices, methods and techniques used in classroom teaching.
  • Understanding of classroom subject matter and teaching methods.
  • Experience using office equipment and computer hardware/software.
  • Ability to use standard classroom equipment and technology and learn specialized equipment and software related to student group assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, parents, students and associates.

Physical Job Requirements

  • Continuous use of hands and fingers to handle or feel, talk, and hear.
  • Frequent sitting, stooping, kneeling, and/or crouching.
  • Reach with hands and arms in the performance of the job.
  • Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally; and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Associates degree in Education or related field preferred.
  • Prior experience as a paraprofessional preferred.
  • Experience working with students with special needs preferred.

Skills

Pay

The hourly rate for this position will range from $18.63 to $23.00 depending on experience.
