Secondary Special Education Paraprofessional

Job Summary

This employee is responsible for assisting the classroom teachers in the implementation of program's established criteria.

Qualifications/Education/Certification

• Bachelor’s Degree, Associate’s Degree, or Paraprofessional Certificate from the appropriate agency

Performance Responsibilities

• Assisting the Teacher in preparing instructional materials to be used in the program
• Assisting in arranging the learning environment, including assembling and putting materials on the bulletin board and arranging center areas
• Working with assigned children under the teacher's direction
• Administering and scoring appropriate screenings and assessments required by the program
• Performing other duties as assigned or required by the program
• Establishing and maintaining high standards of student behavior consistent with district and school policies
• Assisting students with daily activities such as during mealtimes, dressing and toileting
• Attending enrichment classes with students such as art, physical education, Spanish and music as needed
• Attending school-wide assemblies or special programs as needed
• Taking all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, materials, equipment, and facilities
• Supervising the students throughout the day
• Completing record keeping tasks assigned by the teacher
• Riding the school bus as needed to monitor and assist with the safe transportation of assigned children
• Participating in Program In-service Activities

Physical Effort and Work Environment

• Movement throughout the classroom is generally necessary to facilitate learning (e.g., standing, walking, stooping, bending, sitting, and/or kneeling)
• Light lifting of materials and other objects associated with a classroom environment is required (e.g., books, teaching aids, up to approximately 20 – 40 lbs.)
• Lifting of students to help with dressing or toileting as needed
• Rare exposure to blood or body fluids
• Regular attendance is required for this position
