Position Summary

DLS is recruiting multiple highly motivated and talented Paralegals in the following areas:

  • Civil Litigation Unit
  • Criminal Appeals Unit
  • Criminal Litigation Unit
  • Environmental Protection Unit
  • Medicaid Fraud Control & Elder Abuse
  • Public Protection Unit
  • Special Litigation Unit

Salary Information

The Paralegal position is in pay schedule 07 and pay range 04. The starting pay will be between $31.00 - $34.00/hour, depending upon experience and qualifications, plus excellent benefits. Pay for current or former state employees will follow the provisions found in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan effective at the time of hire. A 12-month probationary period may be required.

These positions will be headquartered at the Risser Justice Center located at 17 West Main Street in the award-winning city of Madison. These positions may begin as five days per week at the Risser Justice Center and may later include up to 2 days per week remote work after successful completion of initial training period. A hybrid schedule may require reporting to the Risser Justice Center on multiple consecutive workdays if needed. Travel to the headquarters is not eligible for travel reimbursement. High speed internet access is required to meet the needs of remote work.

Occasional in-state travel will be required. Must be eligible to drive when required for travel.

The Department of Justice does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9.

A background check, including fingerprints, will be completed on applicants prior to selection.

Qualifications

Please address the following in your resume and/or letter of qualifications:

  • Providing general office support and legal support tasks (e.g., proofreading documents, filing and record-keeping, cite-checking, structuring briefs/pleadings, filing documents with the courts, and calendar management, etc.).
  • Utilizing common office technology (i.e., Microsoft Word for word processing, Excel spreadsheets, Outlook or comparable email/calendar software, Adobe Acrobat, Internet resources, and database programs).
  • Managing multiple tasks and prioritizing competing deadlines.

In addition to the minimum qualifications, a well-qualified applicant will have education, training, and/or experience in the following:

  • Drafting legal documents (e.g., pleadings, affidavits, findings of fact, discovery requests or responses, etc.).
  • Working with cloud-based legal practice management software (e.g., Clio).
  • Working with legal case management software (e.g., Time Matters or PCLaw).
  • Supporting attorneys at trial, including the set-up of trial equipment.
