The University of California Office of the President (UCOP) offers a career where your contributions make a difference. As part of UC Legal, the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) delivers ethical, timely, efficient, and high-quality legal services to the University of California's ten campuses, five medical centers, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. This role provides advanced paralegal support for attorneys across multiple practice groups, acting as a liaison with internal clients, outside counsel, and external organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides highly complex analyses across a broad spectrum of practice areas and administrative topics, including in-depth research and analyses as a specialist in multiple practice areas.
  • Coordinates, analyzes, and assists with litigation and claims arising at UC campuses and medical centers, including developing case strategy and problem-solving approaches.
  • Interacts with all levels of University of California staff and external clients to gather information and conduct fact-finding.
  • Researches legal matters, analyzes findings, and reports to attorneys in relevant practice areas.
  • Develops and advocates solutions to system issues such as Net Docs and CounselLink, including creating and administering new systems, policies, processes, or programs.
  • Performs document reviews in response to subpoenas, discovery requests, and California Public Records Act requests for privilege, using keyword and metadata (Boolean) searches and producing electronically stored information (ESI) and paper documents utilizing eDiscovery platforms like Logikcull and/or Relativity.
  • Proposes, leads, and/or participates in legal policy and planning committees and UC Legal practice working groups.
  • Under the direction of a UC Legal attorney, researches, reviews, interprets, and analyzes law, policy, state and federal legislation, and technical information in various legal practice areas.
  • Provides summaries, analyses, recommendations, and positions to clients, outside counsel, and UC Legal attorneys.
  • Researches and summarizes best practices in the paralegal field and develops proposals and recommendations to guide and support a broader strategic direction for the organization.
  • Manages projects and acts as a lead to staff to ensure all components of a project are completed accurately and within designated timeframes.
  • Mentors team members, provides constructive feedback, and supports continuous career development.
  • Serves as a resource to colleagues regarding legal terminology, laws, judicial decisions, court jurisdictions, and procedures.
  • Works with attorneys to direct work to appropriate team members to ensure balanced workloads and opportunities.
  • Conducts recurring one-on-one meetings and performance review check-ins with direct reports.
  • Creates work schedules, assigns specific tasks, and manages workloads to meet deadlines.
  • With guidance from the manager, addresses and resolves employee disputes, complaints, or disciplinary issues fairly.
  • Discusses possible areas for process improvement, project status, and other job-related needs.
  • Works with direct reports on strategic initiatives and UC Legal goals to ensure compliance.
  • Identifies areas for development of self and team and develops plans to obtain necessary training.
  • Delegates work to team members as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum of eight years of relevant work experience and/or training.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience/training.
  • The person hired will be required to reside within California and report to work on-site at UCOP in Oakland, CA on a regular basis. Current policy requires working on-site at least two days per week on Tuesday and Wednesdays (“anchor days”). In exceptional circumstances, approved by the General Counsel, candidates may be considered for a fully remote work arrangement if residing in or willing to relocate to California.

Qualifications

  • Experience in and mastery of a significant body of legal knowledge relating to one or more legal practice areas within UC Legal's Office of General Counsel, demonstrated by eight years of progressively responsible experience as a paralegal in a commercial firm, government, or educational institution.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint), electronic mail, and the internet.
  • Experience with applications to store, retrieve, and analyze data, and generate reports.
  • Advanced research, analytical, and problem-solving skills in support of practice areas.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with all levels of staff and influence outcomes, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to research, problem-solve, and organize information from various sources with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of supervisory techniques gained from experience supervising clerical staff or equivalent training, education, and experience.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills to deploy staffing effectively.
  • Knowledge of eDiscovery software, including but not limited to Relativity and Logikcull.
  • Knowledge of UC protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to multi-task within demanding timeframes.

Pay

Salary range: $120,000 - $142,000 annual, commensurate with experience. The University of California, Office of the President, provides a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role, considering factors such as experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, and certifications.
