Kaplan Kirsch LLP is a fast-growing national law firm devoted to helping clients solve problems involving the nation’s most complex and high-profile projects and issues in transit, rail, real estate, land use, infrastructure, project financing, airports, renewable energy, environmental, conservation, and tribal law. The Firm’s litigation work is often highly visible to the public. Our work is rewarding, and we are tremendously proud of the superior services our team can provide to our clients. The Firm strongly values our colleagues as well as our clients, fostering a collaborative environment where contributions make a meaningful difference.

About the Role

We are seeking a detail-oriented, proactive litigation paralegal to join our growing team to assist attorneys with case strategy, draft pleadings, and leverage cutting-edge eDiscovery tools to manage documents. You will work collaboratively with attorneys, legal assistants, and clients in a supportive culture that values teamwork, initiative, and professional growth.

Responsibilities

  • Legal Research & Fact-Finding: Conduct legal research using Westlaw, LexisNexis, or specialized AI legal research platforms; synthesize case law and factual evidence into clear summaries to support case strategy and briefing.
  • Drafting & Editing: Draft, proofread, cite-check, and format legal documents such as motion and discovery shells, exhibits, trial binders, correspondence, pleadings, and agreements, ensuring strict adherence to court rules and firm style guides.
  • Trial & Hearing Preparation: Coordinate the assembly of exhibits, binders, and required documentation for depositions, hearings, trials, or client presentations.
  • Discovery Protocol & Execution: Assist attorneys in drafting discovery requests, interrogatories, requests for production, and privilege logs. Manage preservation notices, legal holds, and native ESI (Electronically Stored Information) collections.
  • AI & eDiscovery Management: Utilize AI-assisted eDiscovery and document management platforms (e.g., Lexbe, Relativity, Everlaw, DISCO, Briefpoint, or equivalent) to organize, process, and analyze large document productions and databases. Use AI tools to accelerate early case assessments, perform document review, draft initial discovery responses, and flag privileged material under attorney supervision.
  • Filing & Docketing: Handle state (CA), federal, tribal courts, and administrative tribunals filings, both e-filings (CM/ECF) and physical filing systems; accurately docket court deadlines, case milestones, and hearing dates to mitigate scheduling risks. Monitor active case dockets, and download and distribute court documents.
  • Case Matter Management: Update and maintain client data, matter profiles, and conflict-checking systems with a high degree of data integrity. Own case files from inception through resolution. Coordinate complex calendars, scheduling client consultations, depositions, and internal team meetings across multiple time zones.
  • Other duties as needed, including administrative backup support.

Requirements

  • A paralegal certificate or 5+ years of paralegal experience in a private law firm with an emphasis on litigation.
  • Advanced knowledge of California and Federal district courts and filing procedures.
  • Experience with or a demonstrated willingness to learn U.S. Appellate Courts, Tribal Courts, and Administrative tribunals and related procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge of legal software and eDiscovery platforms such as PACER, CM/ECF/E-Filing, Sharefile, TrueFiling, Law ToolBox, RelativityOne, Nextpoint, Lexbe, or equivalent.
  • Tech Savvy: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe, and PowerPoint).
  • High level of accuracy in document drafting, formatting, and proofreading, including citation verification and source pulling.
  • Critical thinking skills, superior communication and organization skills, and the ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of professionalism and discretion.
  • Proactive, team-first attitude and a genuine interest in the work we perform and client service.
  • A deep understanding of attorney-client privilege and the necessity of keeping all firm matters strictly confidential.
