About the Role
Under general supervision, perform routine to advanced paralegal services, including research and document preparation for assigned attorney(s).
Responsibilities
- Conduct research and analysis of facts, applicable laws, and cases—including those of difficult or unusual nature—as instructed by the attorney being supported.
- Confer with attorneys to devise suitable methods and set defensible standards.
- Use online research services and other computer-based or written resources to gather legal information.
- Request information pursuant to applicable statutes and regulations.
- Assist with investigating facts, statutes, regulations, and case law to identify causes of action and prepare cases appropriately.
- Assist with conducting interviews and applying other techniques to obtain pertinent information regarding legal matters.
- Track legislation and provide liaison services in the assigned area, if required.
- Independently compose, proofread, and correct legal correspondence and related documents for review and approval by the attorney, including:
- Business letters, internal memoranda, legal opinions, appeals, pleadings, subpoenas, interrogatories, requests for production, deposition notices, ordinances, resolutions, settlement agreements, contracts, deeds, debt collection instruments, and similar documents.
- Administrative and litigation reports.
- Perform transcription of dictated correspondence, reports, memoranda, and other legal documents.
- Monitor and maintain legal filing systems and law library, including:
- Data entry, review, and updating of legal, utility master, legislative folders, binders, electronic media, and TPIA logs.
- Filing legal documents with court clerks and administrative agencies.
- Records management for workers' compensation, environmental, bankruptcy, personnel, prosecution, and other legal matters.
- Compilation and recording of statistics on closed and archived files.
- Ensuring legal textbooks, reference manuals, and periodicals are up to date, cataloged, cross-indexed, and shelved.
- As authorized or assigned, may direct the work of others, including:
- Assigning work, delegating tasks, reviewing, inspecting, or accepting completed work.
- Guiding task performance and training or developing employees.
- Preparing employees’ performance appraisals.
- Recalling employees to work in emergencies.
- Resolving complaints and recommending disciplinary action, vacation approvals, and merit pay.
Requirements
- An accredited Associate's degree or higher in paralegal or legal assistant studies, or a related field.
- Five (5) years of experience as a paralegal or performing office support work in a legal setting.
- Certified Legal Assistant/Paralegal (CLA/CP) certification conferred by NALA, or Paralegal Core Competency Exam (PCCE) certification or Paralegal Advance Competency Exam (PACE) certification conferred by NFPA, or graduation from an accredited school of law with a Doctor of Jurisprudence (required by time of application).
- Applicants with foreign diplomas, transcripts, or degrees must have all documents translated and evaluated by an agency of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) prior to submission.
Pay
$53,813.55 - $67,266.94 annually
