About the role

This position works under close supervision with required assistance readily available, focusing on witness management assistance prior to, during, and after trial.

Responsibilities

  • Provide witness management assistance, including support for fact witnesses to ensure appearance for court, pre-trial conferences, and grand jury.
  • Receive visitors, field phone calls, and address inquiries from fact witnesses regarding court appearances, pre-trial conferences, grand jury, and expense reimbursement.
  • Obtain information for files and documents to arrange witness travel and reimbursements.
  • Initiate contact and notify fact witnesses about travel arrangements, appearance dates/times, and determine any special needs or circumstances.
  • Use judgment to determine when the Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) should be notified of special witness circumstances (e.g., special authorizations, international witnesses, military/federal employees, or hostile witnesses).
  • Confer with AUSA regarding witness appearances and special circumstances, completing and submitting proper documentation for approval before proceeding with travel arrangements.
  • Ensure all travel documents and appearance details are provided to witnesses prior to their appearance.
  • Arrange fact witness travel and lodging according to Department of Justice and USAO policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and submit documentation for witness reimbursement, including vouchers and other required forms.
  • Furnish information on pending and completed witness vouchers and reconcile Government Travel Accounts.
  • Coordinate with the Court, Probation, Pretrial, U.S. Marshals Service, investigative agencies, and other counterparts as necessary.
  • Complete recurring legal documents in conformance with style and format rules.
  • Compose letters from templates requiring knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology related to fact witness laws and regulations.
  • Perform general office procedures, including maintaining witness files, documents, and databases; assembling materials for retention; and tracking hearings, trial dates, and scheduling conferences.
  • Perform other administrative and logistical duties related to witness management as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain MRPT facility credentials/authorization (U.S. citizenship is required for this work location).
  • Paralegal certificate, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school with at least one year of study completed.
  • One year of legal training or legal experience, or at least two years of college education may substitute for the paralegal certificate.
  • At least one year of litigation paralegal experience or relevant project experience; trial experience is very helpful.
  • Automated litigation support experience is valued.
  • Basic legal knowledge, including standard legal citation to cite-check motions and memoranda.
  • Experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw for basic legal research.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge and hands-on familiarity with computer applications, including word processing, databases (e.g., document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
  • Basic familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality work under extreme pressure.

Pay

The hourly rate for this position is $21.97. The compensation range is a good-faith estimate and may vary based on job responsibilities, education, experience, skills, internal equity, market data, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and relevant laws.
