About the Role

The University of California Office of the President (UCOP) offers a career opportunity to leverage your knowledge and skills within a vibrant and diverse community. As part of UC Legal, the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) delivers high-quality legal services to the University’s campuses, medical centers, and national laboratories. This role provides advanced paralegal support for attorneys in the Litigation practice group, acting as a liaison with internal clients, outside counsel, and external organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides highly complex analyses across a broad spectrum of practice areas, including litigation (defense and affirmative) and claims arising at UC campuses and medical centers. Coordinates case strategy, conducts in-depth fact-finding through witness interviews and document review, and participates in trials and hearings.
  • Develops and advocates solutions to system issues such as Net Docs and CounselLink, including creating and administering new systems, policies, processes, or programs. Leads or participates in legal policy and planning committees and UC Legal practice working groups.
  • Performs document reviews for subpoenas, discovery requests, and California Public Records Act requests, including identifying, preserving, collecting, and producing electronically stored information (ESI) and paper documents using eDiscovery software like Logikcull and Relativity.
  • Researches legal matters, analyzes and reports findings to attorneys, and provides summaries, analyses, and recommendations to clients, outside counsel, and UC Legal attorneys. Reports on new matters and settlements to the Board of Regents.
  • Manages projects and acts as a lead to staff, ensuring accuracy and timely completion. Serves as a resource to lower-level paralegals on legal terminology, laws, judicial decisions, and court procedures. Interacts with all levels of UC staff and external clients for information gathering and fact-finding.

Requirements

  • Minimum of eight years of progressively responsible experience as a paralegal in a commercial firm, government, or educational institution.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience and/or paralegal certification.
  • Experience in and mastery of a significant body of legal knowledge relating to one or more legal practice areas within the Office of General Counsel.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), relational databases, and eDiscovery software (e.g., Logikcull, Relativity).
  • Advanced research, analytical, and problem-solving skills to support practice areas, including assembling and editing legal documents such as briefs, contracts, leases, licenses, and insurance policies.
  • Ability to research laws specific to states other than California to ensure compliance for gifts of real property.
  • Skills to plan and develop data management systems and procedures (e.g., eCounsel, NetDocs).
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with all levels of staff, clients, and vendors.
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to multi-task within demanding timeframes.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of UC processes, protocols, and procedures.
  • Experience in probate, trust, and estates practice.
  • Familiarity with the University of California’s organizational structure, governance, policies, and regulations, as well as the mission of the Office of General Counsel.
  • Familiarity with Proposition 209 policies.
  • Proficiency with MS Project and project management training or certification.
  • Working knowledge of Visio.
  • Experience reviewing financial statements related to Trust and/or Will accountings.

Special Conditions

The hired candidate must reside within California and report to work on-site at UCOP’s Oakland office regularly. Current policy requires on-site work at least two days per week (Tuesday and Wednesday). In exceptional circumstances, a fully remote work arrangement may be considered for candidates residing in or willing to relocate to California.

Pay

Salary range: $57.47 - $62.26/hour (approximately $120,000 - $130,000 annually), commensurate with experience.
