PARAEDUCATOR

About the role

The Louisiana Special School District is seeking a PARAEDUCATOR for the LA School for the Deaf Program. This is an Unclassified Position (12-month and 8 hours a day).

Responsibilities

• Affirmatively assist with teaching, learning, and training activities.
• Assist with duplicating, collecting, and disseminating materials for activities.
• Assist with transportation of students to and from scheduled school activities.
• Implement classroom activities at the discretion of the teacher.
• Maintain classroom organization and prepare instructional materials.
• Work with large or small groups as the teacher designates.
• Track students and assist with personal hygiene and feeding.
• Monitor student behavior and respond to emergency situations.
• Accurately and timely complete district and state reporting forms.
• Enter information electronically with minimal audit findings.
• Maintain organized and appropriate records.
• Communicate effectively with staff.
• Attend faculty, facility, and other meetings as required.
• Assist in student activities, special projects, and school events.

Requirements

• At least 21 years of age.
• A high school diploma or equivalent.
• Passed the ParaPro Assessment Exam.
• Intermediate Plus level sign language proficiency preferred for Louisiana School for the Deaf positions.

Qualifications

• Highly Qualified.
• Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science, or higher degree from a state-approved or regionally accredited institution of higher education.
• Two years of full-time study from a state-approved or regionally accredited institution of higher education.
• Retiree from a LA State retirement system.

Skills

• Ability to perform assigned duties without significant risk of substantial harm.
• Ability to lift, push wheelchairs, support students, and assist with personal hygiene and feeding.
• Effective communication skills.
• Knowledge of Braille, orientation and mobility, adaptive technology, and low vision aids.
