Paraeducator

About the role

Under the direction and supervision of the building principal, the Paraeducator performs tasks related to the monitoring and supervising of students on campus during and after school. A desire and ability to work with students is essential in this position.

Responsibilities

• Monitor students during school hours and after school in the district childcare program, Chinook Station
• Maintain safety of students and act as a positive role model
• Assist students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g., reading stories, listening to students reading, language, spelling, etc.)
• Work with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs
• Know and follow health, safety, and emergency procedures of the district
• Communicate successfully with staff, students, and parents
• Demonstrate professionalism through punctuality and minimal absences
• Promote and practice professional growth and development
• Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct, including the requirements of confidentiality
• Assist professional staff in the administration and correction of classroom exercises, tests, and assessments
• Assist in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs
• Assist with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task
• Assist students in non-instructional areas, such as supervising the student lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridor, study hall, and other related non-instructional areas
• Construct, copy, distribute, and use educational materials as needed
• Assist students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, and achievement of IEP objectives
• Follow all applicable safety rules, procedures, and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs
• Perform crossing guard and recess duties as assigned
• Perform any other related duties as assigned
• Perform duties efficiently and utilize time appropriately
• Maintain an organized and safe work area
• Ensure confidentiality of information
• Adhere to regulations, district policies, and procedures
• Produce quality work and complete work on schedule
• Show initiative and demonstrate flexibility
• Use safety equipment when appropriate

Requirements

• Must be 18 years or older
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Completed one of the following:
  • Associate’s Degree or transcripts verifying 72 college quarter credits or 48 semester credits from an accredited institution
  • ETS ParaPro Assessment with a passing score of 455
  • Pearson Paraprofessional assessment: 220 Para Test (taken at Lower Columbia College or ESD 112; cost not covered by the district)
• Experience or training working with students
• Ability to work and communicate well with staff members
• Ability to follow a variety of prescribed education strategies
• Ability to independently complete assigned tasks
• Knowledge of and ability to assist in reducing negative behaviors
• Knowledge of and ability to instruct in reading, writing, and mathematics
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills
• Ability to follow directions in a cooperative work environment
• Experience with Restorative Justice Practices preferred

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.

Pay

$23.65 - $26.96/hour (DOE).

Schedule

7 hours per day (10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.), 189 days per year (includes 9 paid holidays).
