Paraprofessionals report to the assigned special educator or Title I Coordinator under the direction of the building administration.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree or completion of two years of college coursework, or passing the state qualification exam
  • Compliance with current legal requirements regarding certification and ESSA requirements

Responsibilities

Instructional Support

  • Implements teacher-planned instruction under direct supervision of a teacher, special educator, or related services provider
  • Monitors and assists students during classroom activities
  • Supports students using instructional modifications for lessons prepared by the class teacher or special educator
  • Checks for work completion and reinforces skills previously taught
  • Communicates with team members about a student's program and progress
  • Records and charts data
  • Prepares instructional materials as provided by the classroom teacher (e.g., graphic organizers, manipulatives)
  • Refers questions or concerns related to assessment, programming, or medical status to the case manager or appropriate professional staff
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all student interactions, records, or achievement
  • Participates in professional development at the local level and outside the community

Supervision of Students

  • Supervises students at lunchtime, playground, and recess
  • Supervises students’ arrival and departure within contract hours
  • Supervises study groups and students during transitions

Behavioral and Social Support

  • Implements behavioral student support plans developed by the teacher or team
  • Communicates with team members about a student's program and behaviors
  • Observes, records, and charts students' behavioral responses
  • Facilitates student interactions
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the special education case manager or Building Principal

Skills

  • Able to compose emails and utilize the email system for communication
  • Ability to effectively and appropriately interact with students of all ages, faculty, and administration

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to talk or hear
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms using a keyboard and video display terminal
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required include both close and far vision

Work Environment

  • Standard classroom/school setting
  • Noise level ranges from low to moderate to occasionally high in volume

Salary, work year, and other conditions are contained in the current bargaining unit agreement. Performance for this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with School Board policy.
